Vibration at 20mph and breaking

Hello, hoping someone can help on this.

So around 20 mph/2000rpm there is a vibration that is constant but I can drive through it, there is also a whining noise. No idea what this is.

When going over 50/60 mph and breaking there is also some vibration & the car generally feels unstable.

Any idea what this may be, would appreciate any help before taking into the garage.

Thanks Smile

Hi, the only thing that I have had that coincided with all those symptoms was a failing front differential. It is a known problem with vehicles of around that manufacturing year. Approximately a thousand pounds for the part from LR. Check to see if the vibration occurs when you lift off from high speed but without braking - seems to be a good indication of the diff failing.

There are a few less expensive things to check first such as wheel balance, mud on the inner rims (have you been offroading recently?), front lower arm bushes or balljoints. Vibration on braking can also be excess run-out on the brake discs owing to careless fitting (were they changed recently?). 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Thanks for the response. Wheels were recently balanced & not been off roaring but just before I bought the vechile (6 weeks back) the brakes (disks & pads) were in fact changed. They were really squeaky but that seems to have gone now.

Is there any other signs of the front diff having a problem? I have had a suspension fault once & the front left does occasionaly squeak/creak.

Thanks for our time Smile

New brakes if fitted correctly and good quality parts should not squeal. If the discs had excess run out would be OK for about 1k miles then start vibrating when applied.

Take a sample of the diff oil and if it is black with metallic particles showing on the magnetic drain plug it is FUBAR'd.
There may also be a leak from one or both sides but hard to spot as oil is caught by under tray. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Would brakes vibrate all the time or just on breaking? Might be a silly question Laughing

Also going to sound really stupid but how do I do a diff oil sample?

Thanks so much for your help Smile

There are no silly questions only silly answers Very Happy

If the discs have a problem the vibration occurs on braking. I once had a caliper seize so badly on a Jeep that the car went out of control at low speed without the brakes being applied! That was a nasty moment.

To take a sample of the diff oil requires removal of the under tray to gain access to the diff drain plug. If you are going to go that far you may as well change the diff oil anyway.

If you bought the car from a dealer you must have a three month warranty? If so you have the right to take it to a garage of your choice and get it fixed under the terms of the warranty but probably need to get approval before work is done. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Brakes won't cause a vibration at one speed, more likely a heat shield or as already mentioned if you have a whine, diff or wheel bearing. To check diff oil, drain in to a clean container then filter into another container with Mrs best flour strainer. If there is any metal partiicals or black bits of paint then diff is goosed. If you have a transmission specialists such as TES near you, they usually have a rolling road and can pinpoint source of noise while running the system. Our Disco did something similar and turned out to be rear diff even though noise sounded like front. Quick check with stethoscope revealed and worn front wheel bearing too. Bow down 2x TDV6. SE and HSE. Both returned to sender with issues👀

Thanks for you reply Smile

I did have a bushings issue a few weeks back that the dealer sorted, he is also happy to pay for any issues that are with the car now & we have it booked in this week for a couple of smallish problems. I will get them to look into this issue and I think they will do a road test with me but I though if I had a good idea of the problem(s) then I could point them in the direction.

I now know this is a solid way to point them & may as well just get them to sort if its a bit of effort Very Happy

Would the diff issue be related to the brakes of will they be separate issues?
