Has anyone of heard this ...

TDV8 (22,000mls) went in for non-orginal battery to be replaced under warranty. In the course of changing it the technician decided the alternator was u/s. He believes this is because the non-OE battery had different characteristics to the Land Rover unit and so the 'Smart Charging' system was not sensing the voltage and ampage correctly and this has blown the alternator's little brain.

If this is true then be careful fitting aftermarket batteries and possible impact and warranty issues if the alternator goes t-ts up.

Not sure I believe this as I didn't know the RR Sport TDV8 had the smart charging system -I thought it was just introduced on the Evoque and is some form of regenerative system.

Anyone heard this one before and can confirm if and when 'smart charging' was brought in on the Sport or are we talking b--s--t?

Absolute rubbish - check the ampere hour rating of the two batteries and unless the non OE battery is massively higher (I.e 50% plus which I doubt) the charging current would be virtually identical - and certainly no more than the load on the alternator of running a flat OE battery with the lights and other electrical loads on the car.

Unless one of our honest dealers can prove us wrong; just for the hell of it I might just ask JLR.

JLR reSponse would be that they only recommend the LR one.
I'm sure the battery manufacturer of the none oe one would be interested to hear about this....

My 'situation' is ongoing.

I spotted a few problems when I test drove the car that was after it had been pre-Sales inspected and serviced.

Also since taking delivery under a month ago it has been in for warranty work 3 times - the issue with the batteryand alternator being the latest.

Since I am considering rejecting the car I'll shy away from 'naming and shaming' for the moment and see how it pans out.

You should not have a problem as long as you use a lead calcium battery, if you fit a lead accid battery you may find it plays up with Land Rovers (Smart / CAN controlled) Charging System

Yep.

Although they are all 'lead / acid' the 'calcium' battery has coated plates to increase starting power and longevity. I think a calcium battery needs to be charged at 15v.
