Advice on selling cherished registration

I've just had a personal plate put on retention. I've got the retention doc and it says on the doc assignment fee has already been paid.

How do I go about selling the plate? Is it just a case of just advertising it and giving the buyer the retention paper and that's it, or is it a bit more involved??

Cheers in advance. Dave.

No it will cost you again if you sell it. As you can only put it on a car that is registered to you. I think it is about £25.00

You can put a reg on a car that is either assigned to the holder of the retention certificate, or the designated nominee on the certificate.

i.e. If I buy a reg knowing that I will want to put it on my wifes car, then I would buy the reg in my name, and have my wife assigned as a nominee at the time of purchase. Then she can assign the registration to a car that is in her name.

If I just buy it in my name, and then at a later date decide to let my wife put it on her car, I would have to pay a £25 admin fee at the time of putting the reg onto her car in order to have her name added as a nominee.

The same applys when selling, you would have to pay £25 to add the name of the buyer as a nominee in order for them to put the registration onto their own vehicle.

The name of the nominee on the retention certificate must match exactly the keepers name to whom the destination vehicle is registered in order to be able to transfer the plate. The usual rules on not making the car look younger blah blah apply also.

Hope that helps. Very Happy RRS 3.0D HSE 11MY - Fuji White, a few extras.

All you have to do is sign section 1 without including a car reg number as I assume you won't have it from the buyer. Then complete the nominee section (think is section2 or might be 3) add the buyers name but it needs to the name who their car is registered to and where the plate will be going. Then they have to take the retention cert. with their log book and £25 fee and that's it, dvla will put it on the car the same day

I've just done exactly the same for my wife's new BMW 1 series 120d m sport, dead easy! RR Sport TDV8 09 Santorini Black with all the trimmings
