Exactly, still too many dogs being docked for no reason

I'm all for it in the correct circumstances (gun dogs etc) but not for cosmetic reasons.

They both look lovely. Some what bigger than my 2 year old Border Terrier

Why do people chop their tails off? What are the reasons?

In certain instances it is for the good of the dog, eg working dogs such as Springer Spaniels used as proper gun dogs. I believe it is to stop their tail becoming caught when chasing through bracken etc. I think you can get it done by a vet if there is a valid reason such as this.

Other than the above, I believe its now illegal, but I still see plenty of dogs with docked tails and I've sure as hell not heard of anyone being prosecuted for docking the tails

i think your correct, but after having breeds in the family that have always had their tales docked, it seems to look strange when you see a dog that has its tail still.

I agree for working dogs and the reason why its not done nowadays, it just looks strange to see the same thing your used to been different, maybe when the wife allows the purchase of the dog I'll have to buy a working varient to keep the tradition and look

^^ I know what you mean, Jack Russells always make me , as they used to always have docked tails, whereas now, most have long ones and look slightly odd with a tail nearly as long as their body. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

One reason for doing it:

The tip of the tail has been damaged (presumably by working in heavy cover) and, whilst bleeding, has spread blood onto the flanks of the dog. Obviously this isn't good for the dog and looks horrific too.

My English Springer is docked and this was done by the breeder's vet as required by law. But it was done so that a reasonable tail remains - you can still tell his mood etc. He was bred and bought for working so that's fine. I know people with non-working Springers with full tails. They look great. If Archie wasn't intended to work, I'd have been happy for him to be entire, tail-wise.

I've seen entire tailed dogs working with no problems, docked tail dogs with problems and vice versa. But docked dogs seem to have less issues with tail damage when working heavy cover.

It's still an emotive subject and feelings on both sides of the discussion can run high. There are vets that refuse to dock tails; although they're still happy to take money off you for treating your docked dog later on!

I'm intrigued by the pictures of the Rotties. Never seen one with an entire tail. Rather like the look, I have to say.
