Holiday ideas

A lot of you guys are "well traveled" and appreciate the finer things - so can you help me ?

Her indoors is 40 this month and I have promised her a "nice holiday" at half term (October). We usualy just go to Ambleside or skiing, so I have little imagination or ambition on where to go at this time of year, where to stay, what to do,etc.

Don't want to fly too far (stay in Europe), ideally starting at Newcastle Airport and the only idea so far is to go to Italy to visit Pompeii. Is that a "good idea" or can you suggest anywhere else for a week in October with wife and 8 year old daughter ?

Thanks RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

Hi mate,

rome is fabulous if you havent been there before.

loads to do , vatican/trevi/colliseum/etc,etc

short cheap flight (go with alitalia if you can , cheaper than most and the trolley dollies are superb!)

cheap hotels , friendly natives .
The only down side is the strength of the Euro Big Cry

If you do go make sure you have your photo's taken with the gladiators outside the colliseum..great fun.

When we went we stayed at a great family run hotel near the railway station.
I'll see if I can recall the name..........

Monte bella!

Good luck

To the sun at half term................................£££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££££
How about somewhere a bit off the tourist track like a fly drive to North Portugal, the Porto area - miles of white sandy beaches, there's the tours of the Port houses and you can stay in the Pousadas (upmarket B&B's in country houses). Weather is warmer than the UK but can be windy and damp too.

Was going to suggest Playa Blanca at the south end of Lanzarote which is very peaceful and quiet, but half term could be difficult and pricey for flights.

P&O Ferries do a minicruise from Portsmouth to Bilbao in north Spain which might suit too - cruise down, stay a couple of days and then cruise back, it's also a car ferry so you could take the car as well if you wanted. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Nimes in the south of france is good, plenty of Roman antiquities to see including a roman ampitheater, and the Pont du Gard aqueduct. Nimes has an airport just to the south if you want to fly there. There are lovely driving roads around the area with gorges and show caves just north of Nimes. Being not too far from the martime alps you could try some of the high alp passes. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

Agree Rome is worth visiting, but if I was to visit Italy I would be heading a little further south and ending up on the Amalfi coast. Some beautiful hillside villages, a VERY scary road joining them all and a short trip on the ferry out to Capri Thumbs Up

Yep...and too many piles of rubbish. Worth a trip up Vesuvius though and of course, you've already thought about Pompeii which is worth visiting, even if just to look at the Roman porn that's painted onto the walls Thumbs Up

Some of the hill towns in the South of France are great plus you're close to Cannes and Nice. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
