British Icon has been sold..................

Yes it's true, sold and going to Dubai based investors

The QE2 has been sold by it's American owners to a Dubai company to become a floating hotel in the "Palm" luxury resort developement. Carnival got $100million for her which isn't bad when you consider the age (40 years old) and the pretty awful state she is now in. But still another British Icon has gone. It will be interesting to see what name they give her as I believe the current name and callsign cannot be transferred to new owners under a special agreement that Carnival/Cunard have with HRH and the UK government. You can read about it here:

I thought I was older than 10 when I watched her being towed down the Clyde, My father was at the launch but he wasnt allowed to take the kids with him so we had to watch from afar. Got a row in school the next day for taking the day off to watch it Smile

Alicatt so many of the fathers of pupils at Drymen Primary School where I spent part of my schooling, worked at John Brown's that the headmaster even got a telly in the school so we could all watch the launch. We got a day off school for the opening of the Forth Road Bridge though! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

My dad served his time with Denny's ship yard as did his father ..... all the way back to 1730ish when Denny first opened. I was in the Vale academy when the QE2 was launched, I never got any punishment or that as the rector was at the launch with my dad Smile
Now Drymen I know very well, I used to go to the Croftamie riding school just up at the crossroads there, long gone now I think as there is a big cottage built on what was our sand-school.
I also used to go in and explore around Buchanan Castle before catching the bus back to Balloch.
I don't remember having a day off for the Forth road bridge, my dad's cousin was a civil engineer on that project, I remember him coming back from Africa to start on the Forth bridge.

Al the 1st school I went to in Scotland was Croftamie School while our house in Drymen was being built. We lived in the house at Drymen Bridge throughout the build period. Croftamie School is the only school I went to where the lads wore skirts as the school uniform....... I was there from November 1963 till summer 1964, the winter that Loch Lomond completely froze over.
My brother owns the flats in the old Drymen Station building. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Eeee when a wer a lad...

I started primary in Haldane in 1961 and I remember going on the Lake of Mentieth in my dad's car Shocked that would be 63/64. Most of Loch Lomond was frozen over but you couldn't walk to Inch Murin as it was too thin. We kept a boat at Balmaha but that wasn't until 68.
