I should have added the £5's worth of aquarium pipe that everybody told me afterwards was what I needed!! Would have saved me £400 in repairs........................... or I could have avoided going into the deep wading special stage but then that wouldn't have been so much fun as having water up over the bonnet. At least I remembered to close the underscreen vents unlike a couple of folks who ended up with fould smelling stagnant water inside their cars!

Embarassed Embarassed that happened to the first ship in the class on it's maiden voyage......................... the ship has a new type of engine where the lubrication and fuel systems are all electronic instead of mechanical, and there is (I'm not joking here!) and a Vee belt about the size of a large elastic band in the system and on the passage from Japan back to Europe they used up the entire stock of spare elastic bands and ran out half way across the Bay of Bengal just before Christmas 3 years ago (whenever the Tsunami was). So here is $90million of ship drifting in the ocean for the sake of an elastic band, 600miles from the nearest land. So the company airfreights a case of belts out to Galle in the south of Sri Lanka and hires a tug to carry this cardboard box out 600 miles into the ocean. The guys on the tug were very, very lucky because not long after they sailed from Galle the tsunami struck............................. they never felt a thing out in the deep ocean.

As for the other sort of oars (the two legged painted lady variety Mr. Green) .......................... well port security is now so strict that we just don't see then on board these days and port stays are so short that nobody gets the time to get ashore even for that sort of recreation........................................ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Wives of senior officers have always been allowed to accompany their husbands on voyages, unrestricted. Junior officers' wives are allowed to do one voyage a year. Since the company I work for merged with a Dutch company the ruling on wives was changed due to the Ducth being less prudish and also being fully signed up to the European Social chapter, to partners = so that female officers can bring their husbands and gay officers can take their partner away as well. To take a partner (as opposed to spouses) there are certain requirements the company demands are met - you have to prove that you have lived together in the same house for 5 years, had a joint bank account in that time. This is to prevent people from taking somebody they met in a bar/club or off the street away with them (it has happended!) Also in the case of female partners they have to submit to a medical to prove they are not pregnant (and they are also not allowed to become pregnant whilst on board) before joining the vessel. This because we don't carry a doctor on board and although there are 3 or even 4 fully trained paramedics onboard (I'm one and usually the other 3 deck officers are as well) our facilities and medical locker could not cope with any problem that might develope during a pregnancy.
As the Master, I also have the power to refuse to have a wife or partner on board - before any wife/partner is permitted to travel I am asked by the company if I have any objections to them joining for the voyage - I have to have a very good reason to refuse, but I have sailed with a Captain who did and with very good reason - the partner wishing to travel was his ex-wife who had had an affair on board with another officer and subscequently divorsed her Captain husband and married the other officer............................. there are partners who I have sailed with who I would refuse to have on board due to their bad influence or behaviour that I have previously experienced when sailing with them. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
