Wives of senior officers have always been allowed to accompany their husbands on voyages, unrestricted. Junior officers' wives are allowed to do one voyage a year. Since the company I work for merged with a Dutch company the ruling on wives was changed due to the Ducth being less prudish and also being fully signed up to the European Social chapter, to partners = so that female officers can bring their husbands and gay officers can take their partner away as well. To take a partner (as opposed to spouses) there are certain requirements the company demands are met - you have to prove that you have lived together in the same house for 5 years, had a joint bank account in that time. This is to prevent people from taking somebody they met in a bar/club or off the street away with them (it has happended!) Also in the case of female partners they have to submit to a medical to prove they are not pregnant (and they are also not allowed to become pregnant whilst on board) before joining the vessel. This because we don't carry a doctor on board and although there are 3 or even 4 fully trained paramedics onboard (I'm one and usually the other 3 deck officers are as well) our facilities and medical locker could not cope with any problem that might develope during a pregnancy. As the Master, I also have the power to refuse to have a wife or partner on board - before any wife/partner is permitted to travel I am asked by the company if I have any objections to them joining for the voyage - I have to have a very good reason to refuse, but I have sailed with a Captain who did and with very good reason - the partner wishing to travel was his ex-wife who had had an affair on board with another officer and subscequently divorsed her Captain husband and married the other officer............................. there are partners who I have sailed with who I would refuse to have on board due to their bad influence or behaviour that I have previously experienced when sailing with them. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it 2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced 2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW Last edited by Tim in Scotland on Mon Jun 18 2007 12:38am.
