Thinking of getting a private plate, having not had one before, not 100% sure on procedure, maybe some of you guys out there that have them can enlighten me
I know there are websites out there about it all, but it takes ages to find the right answers

When you sell you can put your cherished plate on 'retention'. DVLA will then re-issue a number to your car which is often the one that it used to have anyway. Darren Griffin

Not heard of paying £25 to keep the old plate before. Whenever I have sold my car, I have put the private plate on retention and the dvla have just reassigned the original number back onto the car. Just keep your old number plates so that you can put them back on when you sell the car.

Ahh! More like £125 to reassign your number plate, having just done it.

Very straight forward to move it to another vehicle. Takes about 4 - 6 weeks for the paperwork to come through. TDV6 - gone

You can buy your plates from so many different sources these days .... I have bought several and these have been sourced through private adds and from the DVLA direct and from attending one of their auctions. Which ever method/route you choose it is pretty straight forward.

If you buy a plate immediately from DVLA - you will have the chance to assign it to a vehicle at a later date. If it still hasn't been assigned to a car then it will cost you £25 to keep it on retention for a further year.

Once you have purchased a plate - transferring to another vehicle is easy but time consuming. If your new car is bought new from a dealer - they will handle all this for you EASY ..... but if you prefer to sell your ca privately then you had best apply to remove your plate 1st. You will need a form form DVLA = a V778/1 and will cost £105 ..... but this figure represents the £25 retention fee and the £80 assignment fee.

when you do change the plates on the car be aware that if you sell the car on after changing the plate again it will flag up an anomaly on a HPI report, this mat not be a problem if you are P/Xing the car only if you are sellling it privately and the purchaser gets a report out of hours, he will then need to contact the HPI company to double check the status.

i know this because it has happened to me several times, unless things have changed with HPI checks
