Noisy rear diff 4.2 SC

Just been under the car at the local garage’s pit. Slight weep and some movement on the right hand output going to the driveshaft.

Are rebuild kits available or should I get a recon diff ? Any advice or guidance welcome !

I’m in the North West.

As an update, as I know you’re all on tenterhooks - JGS4x4 do a rebuild kit for £140 and Birch 4x4 1 mile from work can do the fitting, so all good !

Both diffs have a breather, I believe. The top end of the breather sits up near the fuel filler. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Google Castrol SAF Carbon Mod plus as that's shown as well in later handbooks. I believe Ravenol MDL is also a equivalent.

Couldn't find the Carbon plus at an ok price either and JGS4x4 have the Rock Oil equivalent as an option instead of the BOT720, however, I couldn't get hold of anyone there, so called Blackhawk Solutions and spoke to a very helpful chap called Jerry.

First time I'd come across them and was very impressed with the knowledge and service, so popped in an order for a couple of litres. Price was extremely good too !

Bearing kit arrived yesterday - all are Timken, so top quality as far as I understand. Diff oil also arrived swiftly from Blackhawk Solutions, so looking forward to the rebuild next Monday.

Hopefully I'll get Birch to do a pictorial.

Update ! Car was with Birch 4x4 in Liverpool for a couple of days. They removed the diff, cracked it open and found pretty much every single bearing in need of replacement. The bearing and seal replacement kit from JGS4x4 did the job and although it took a little while to get the diff out (partial exhaust removal, rear suspension partial removal, prop shaft removal) it was definitely worth doing.

The rear end sounds much much quieter now and luckily the internal gears were all perfect, with no chipping of teeth or wear.

If you have a noisy rear diff it’s worth a full rebuild for peace of mind.

£1,100 all in incl parts, labour and new diff oil, but I can now sleep at night.

Getting to the end of the jobs that need doing, but still sufficient to keep me occupied !
