I just went in to buy mine and the dealer told me they wont work until I pay them £70 to reprogram the computer. Is this ture - did you all have to have the dealer reprogram your computer before the electrics worked?

There is an almost identical thread running over on Disco3 about towing electrics. Check this out for more info:

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic3157.html

I think the tow pack electrics are "plug & play". I haven't heard of anyone else that has had to have the vehicle reprogrammed to make the system work.

Your stealer may be saying this to get a bit more money out of you. But there again, my towing electrics were factory fitted. So what do I know . . . Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.

They are plug and play - the only programming needed is that there is a setup change to disable RRS rear fog lights when towing to reduce glare in the rear view mirror agaisnt say (and heaven forbid) a caravan in tow. If towing only trailers or bike racks etc not problem and only a problem anyway if the glare of fogs in rear view mirror is excessive.

As far as I know anyway. I fitted my own and work fine.

Ive just spoken to Land Rover direct and they say it must be reconfigured; a new configuration file needs to be downloaded to the ECU and if I dont do it, it may mess up something else on the car.

Can you confirm that you just plugged it in and it works (apart from fog lights etc) - all I want to do is make myself legal and put a lighting board on the back of my cycle carrier.

What a joke! Anyone have any ideas why LR make is so difficult for people to feel like they 'own' their cars, rather than getting permission and paying a royalty to the dealer everytime you want to do something!

Soon they will be setting them up so the car wont start after 10000 miles, and you wil have to go to the dealer and pay £300 to get it reset!!!!!

Daniel.
I am SO disappointed with this vehicle

When I added extra driving lights the ECU needed to be reprogrammed. My dealer charged £25.00+VAT 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten
2009 Alaska TDV8 - Gone and much missed.

dsingeruk....

Sounds like cobblers to me - I have an MY06 vehicle 55 plate - bought the elecs kit for £70 odd and after an hour or so kit was fitted - everything works fine including fogs. I was doing the same thing - towbar mounted bike rack with integral lighting board - all fine with no SW upgrade.

Dealer mentioned that SW upgrade was needed but on questioning disclosed its only to disable vehicle rear fogs for a caravan scenario.

It works.

Dealer is looking to cash in - it 'may' mess something up - cobblers - they wouldn't sell it for you to fit if it was that critical.

Phone Marshalls Lincoln - or any other dealer for a second opinion if you still need it. PM me for mobile number if you want to chat it through...

Obviously, any advice you get from forum members here can't be binding against your car blowing up, but it seems to be the case that plenty have done their own thing when it comes to the tow bar kit without any issue. If you want to line the stealer's pockets with even more of your hard earned cash, then feel free Very Happy
