I'm reading it from the Vehicle Registration Certificate, which would be the equivalent of the V5.

Just went out to look at the Freelander VIN & it does indeed have SAL as the first three letters.

So the VIN entry on the VRC is incorrect !

Still need to figure out some of the other codes, which seem to be at odds the way the RRS & D3 are coded

Believe it or not this is very common for the V5C to be incorrect, the VRN is the same  Speed Limits! not where I live!
