I need help from a GEEK.

I have a networking problem. I have 2 wireless networks in my new home running from 2 tel line. Unfortunately the signal doesn't reach an outbuilding I have that I want to have a PC in. I have tried using the ethernet network over the electricity mains but this doesn't work either, and yes I can get it to work in the main building. The only physical wire that works both in the house & outbuilding is a telephone cable. Am I right in believing that you can only have one router per network? The obvious solution is to run an ethernet cable between the 2 buildings but I', looking for a neater solution.

Can any suggest anything? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

Dom,

You could change the wireless aerial to a highe gain version - i.e. keep the router, but change the aerial - or even try a wireless extender

Go to http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c...8991233B01 and then scroll down to "Range Expanders & Antennas"

Certainly could... although the best and most reliable way of doing this is going to be running UTP between the two buildings. By all means distribute the network wirelessly at the other end.

Alternatively, if you won't/can't do that, you could look at joining the buildings on a couple of Rangemax routers (these are Netgear's high-power WLAN offerings - not yet ratified as a standard though, so not massively futureproofed).

You can have as many routers as you like (within address numbering limits and your ability to play with sub-net mask values)

As Shmoogle says, you can:

1. Put Ethernet wire between the buildings
2. Create a higher powered or directional wireless link (Pringles cans are good - search for wireless pringles on the Internet!)
3. Use laser based network bridges
4. Use serial ethernet extenders/bridges (see http://www.amplicon.co.uk/Data-Comms/produ...s-3537.cfm for examples)
