United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
My New 2008my TDV6 Sport HSE

Hi to all you members.New here so go easy with me.

I've been reading all the posts now for months and decided to bite the bullet and order one of these babys.
Having been a Land Rover owner many times in the past (2 Range Rovers) and (7 Disco's) and by Defender 90 i know to well the problems i may have.

I picked up my new car on the 24th May. Well i was well impressed, drove smoothly and was just the ticket. That was until after a couple of days when upon start up it puffed out a large cloud of black smoke. So i contacted the dealer(Williams of Manchester) and was told id could just be the engine needed a good blow out !!!

So last friday i was on the motorway and gave it a bit of stick and it puffed out a bigger cloud of black smoke and then died on me. I managed to limp home and rang teh dealer straight away. To cut a long story short it was taken to the garage and on Monday i got the phone call to say it needed a new engine. AS i had only covered 300 miles in the 2 weeks of ownership i rejected the vehicle. They spoke tp Land Rover who agreed so now i have to wait another 3 months for my new car. To say i am a bit p....d off is an under statement but 10/10 to the dealer for the service they have given me.

Any comments?

I think I can back LR up on that piston story - I don't think there has been anybody on here that has had that problem or needed a new engine in the 2 years since launch.
I am surprised that you have to wait 3 months for a replacement TDv6 though, unless your "lemon" had a lot of factory options on it. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Forgot to say that I'm really sorry to hear about your problem, and welcome to the forums!
Colour maybe? Maybe the compounds are full of Java Black RHD RRS's at the moment! Hope you hadn't ordered a white one otherwise I could understand the wait! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Oh no they haven't!

When the Range Rover 4.6 engine was first introduced back in 1993, I purchased an engine from LR to fit in my Morgan (I do things like that) and at the last moment decided to strip the crank and piston assembly in order to get them balanced. On dismantling the engine I found to my horror that all the con-rod bolts were only finger tight and one piston had no rings on it! This was a brand new engine straight off the 'Friday' production line.

Back in the 60's (yes I am that old) I had to go to Ford Dagenham to repair a crankshaft grinder. At the side of the machine was a pile of Escort crankshafts which the machine had ground undersized, and on which was attached a large SCRAP sign. Returning the next morning I found the crankshafts had been removed, and so I thanked the foreman for shifting them out of my way. "Oh, they weren't removed for you. The night shift ran out of crankshafts and so took them for production - it's cheaper to replace them when customers complain rather than to stop production"!

Well with my TDV8 now a matter of weeks away, I hope things have changed, both at Ford and at LR - it makes me wonder though.

Yes - sorry Craigeman to here of your misfortune. Gone - 2008 TDV8, Stornoway Grey, ebony, zabrano trim, TV, Tasmods, mudflaps.

Welcome and very sorry to here of your woe.

It's the first one I've heard of. But I would have thought LR could source a TDV6 quicker than that for you. I would consider pushing them on that and see if one can be found around the dealers.....ok might not have the DVD screens..but if you push for a decent discount they can be done aftermarket by Prestige Audio (one of this sites sponsers) or anyone else. TDV6 - gone
TDV8 - gone

RRSJo (edit due to senility) your tale is quite believable!
Remember the Ford Escort XR3 (not the XR3i)?? My father took delivery of a White one in Bristol on the launch day and set out to drive back to Scotland in it. He got as far as Birmingham before there was a huge bang and most of the engine dropped out onto the M6. After phoning the dealer in Bristol a COVERED recovery vehicle showed up in less than 30 minutes from a Birmingham Ford dealer and the car was taken away their service bay where a techy from Ford was waiting to look at it - his passing comment to my father was "we knew before launch that there had been a bunch of defective engines installed, yours is the first but we expect many more in the next couple of days!" My father was gobsmacked that Ford had done nothing to trace the duff engines, but the reply was the same as yours Kaine - it was cheaper to let the customers have an engine go bang and fit a new one, especially a few weeks before a major product launch!
That XR3 went on to cover 190,000 miles in 5 years with my father's ownership and then my sister bought it and ran it for another 2 years. It only "died" because somebody had the misfortune to have their speedboat jump off it's trailer and land on the XR3 crushing it beyond viable repair! It never missed another beat in all those miles and was one of the most reliable cars we have had in our family 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

How close to the truth they were.....but probably not expecting a piston through the sidewall!

Sorry to hear about your probs craigeman, not a great intro to LR, but unfortunately not an unusual story! RRS TDV6 Bluetooth, VR, Roof
