Security - steering lock

I use a Disklok which is bulky and a PITA to fit and use daily, so regularly gets left off. I have seen this and it looks interesting and cheap: https://ouvra.store/

After watching a few YT videos where steering locks were tested to destruction, the best was the one you have. I decided that one would be too much hassle and opted for the second best which was this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XP21DK6?th=1

The idea of having some large metal bar rolling around in the car that you have to mess with every time you get out of the car and then again when you get into the car sounds like a nightmare to me. What a total pain! Do you fit it when you go to pay for fuel? What if you're just going to the supermarket?

To me, there are 2 options I've seen that are even remotely tolerable.

The first is the one shown by skid1963. That is at least small enough to go into the glove box and pretty quick to add and remove, but to me, even that is too much hassle. I want to enjoy my car which means I open the door, get in and drive away as the designers intended.
So, and I know it's £500 but it's a one-off and can theoretically be moved between cars, the day my RRS arrived on my drive, so did the bloke who fits ghost immobilisers.
I can leave my 494 parked in the dodgyest area of London, with the doors unlocked, and be pretty confident it'll still be there when I come back. 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography

Hi, can someone explain to me? I updated the steering wheel controls, they work at first, the automatic gear shift paddles didn't work, then they told me to make a bridge to the two black wires on the left terminal board, now the paddles work, when the headlights are turned on, the left control turns off and doesn't work anymore, as soon as I turn off the headlights it starts working again, can someone help me solve this problem if it can be solved?

I have a ghost fitted but would not pair it to my phone. Its only another potential security breach. What is so difficult spending another 5 seconds pressing 4 buttons.
I can see the benefit of a visual deterrent, the Powerfull UK one on the gearstick looks neat, but each to there own Range Rover Sport (gone): Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe: 992 Porsche Carrera 4S: Range Rover Fifty P400e

I put a ghost on my wifes Discovery Sport a couple of years ago. Tried the phone pairing but was a headache in my case. Not sure why (IPhone) but it rarely ever worked. The other problem I had, I guess probably also related to the car's wake up process was that often it took 4 or 5 attempts before the code was accepted, especially first thing in the morning. It was a pain for me and there was no way the Mrs would tolerate it.
After a few conversations with the installer, where he told me I wasn't alone, I bought the official ghost fobs which work great.
I've done the same with the RRS - though to be fair I really should see how good it is without - may be fine on that one.

At the moment they're on the ring with the keys which means from my perspective, the ghost isn't there,I just get in and drive, but I accept it isn't great if the keys are stolen so I take them upstairs with me at night. Would be better if the fob was elsewhere, wallet maybe, but I don't always carry that these days so haven't come up with a good solution yet, it's just a convenience thing and still means any key cloning (supposedly not possible after the updates?) is rendered even more impossible. 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography

I've had immobilisers fitted before and there's no arguing that they work. However, the thieving scrote doesn't know you have one fitted until he's already broken into the car and done untold damage.

But a big yellow bar through the steering wheel that can be seen easily in the windscreen will discourage them before they attempt entry.

It takes less than ten seconds to fit and the same to remove - so no effort at all.

It's an interesting perspective. I'm not sure personally.
In the old days, if they wanted to steal a car, they'd smash the window, open the door and then wreck various parts of the interior to bypass the key/wheel lock.
Do they still do that?
These days, if they can't bypass the electronic door lock (which is going to be deadlocked so breaking the window isn't going to be very helpful to them), they are well aware they aren't going to get past the car's own immobiliser (whether or not there's a secondary system) so no point trying, hence why they do things such as key cloning and various clever things with OBD devices.
In truth, as far as I am aware, there is no real way to steal an later RRS these days without the key, hence they tend to break into houses - though I dare say earlier ones would still be prone so the approach does depend greatly on the model and year.
Last I read, Range Rover thefts are down dramatically with almost no thefts of the latest ones. 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography

41 jules,

Ref phone pairing:- no issues at all, a couple of seconds delay before confirmation but it works everytime.

iPhone 12 & 14 with latest IOS updates.

Never failed in 20 months.

Yeah - I do wonder whether it would have worked fine on the L494. I suspect it probably does.

The L550 that the Mrs has, has always been a bit fiddly in this regard. I've sometimes got in, started the engine, waited almost a minute and put in the code, and .. nothing. Tried again nothing, 3 more attempts and then magically I get an indicator flash. Then next time, first attempt. I could never get a handle on it. I guess it could be a dodgy ghost unit but strangely it's worked faultlessly since I got the tags, which are, at the end of the day, bluetooth so should work the same way as the iphone, and yet that was equally unreliable.
All very odd. 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography
