Jay,

Just been having a look at my router settings and it would appear that it is possible to get a permanent IP number, just depends on your ISP provider.

In my router (Netgear DG834PN) it says the following:

Internet IP Address

If you log in to your service or your ISP did not provide you with a fixed IP address, the Router will find an IP address for you automatically when you connect. Select Get Dynamically From ISP.

If you have a fixed (or static IP) address, your ISP will have provided you with the required information. Select Use Static IP Address and type the IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway IP Address into the correct fields.

For example:

IP Address: 24.218.156.183
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway IP Address: 24.218.156.1

Jay - you just need a dynamic DNS

go to www.dyndns.com - register the shop pc there and give it any name you want - i.e. jayman.dyndns.org or similar.

Everytime your shop pc logs in it contacts dyndns and updates its current ip

then from home, instead of putting 87.174.**.** etc etc, you just type in jayman.dyndns.org - it will then just connect upto the latest ip address for that domain

Hope that makes sense and helps

Kaine

anyway - not a problem - once you've set the computer up at the shop, you can just login to dyndns.com at home and see the ip address

that doesn't matter so much though - you can still just login from home and check the latest ip and then use that - isn't that what you wanted to do?

Are you all sorted out Jay? The Dyndns route is the way to do it or alternatively, just get your ISP to allot that connection a static IP (which they may or may not charge for). The static IP method obviously involves no work at your end other than to phone the ISP, which might suit you Laughing
