Premium diesel recommendations ??

Having not had my,2011 RRS 3.0 tdv6 hse (89,000 miles), long, I will be running it on premium diesel for a while and was wondering if anyone had a preference in brands. I know some of you will think premium fuels are a conspiracy and a waste of time... if it is, I’m using it as a mental feel good feeling... like after you wash the car it seems to run better lol ( am I the only one lol).

Thinking of just running half a dozen tanks full

I would think Shell V-Power is probably the most reputable brand, but not sure with diesel the benefits are as great as using V-Power petrol where the benefits especially on petrol turbo engines is well documented MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

Hello all, I did a couple of experiments over the winter with diesel fuel. I started the RR on a cold morning without pre heating the engine with the FBH, using Jet diesel for a while and the initial idle was really quite uneven. The same Jet diesel with a pre heat from the FBH as I always do and the initial idle was nice and smooth. After a couple of week using V Power diesel and a cold start wit V Power and no pre heat from the FBH the initial idle was smooth. I know it’s not very scientific but it was a real world test. We’re using V Power constantly now.

The problem with more “scientific” is that it’s not real world so I think your findings are far more useful. Thanks for that

I use BP Ultimate Diesel so must be the odd one out,
used it every fill up since Oct 2018 when I picked the
car up, and its always been fine, not sure its doing anything
but happy with it all the same.. ===========================================

The point about scientific is that it is repeatable and verifiable. "Real world" gut feeling results aren't. That's why scientific makes things like cars, aircraft, spacecraft, vaccines, computers. And the other way leads to astrology and crystals... Whistle

Now, if you were to approach the comparison using double blind tests, we might be able to make a valid conclusion. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Yes, of course, your right. Thing is my gut is so large that my gut feeling has to be right lol... joking aside, you can’t beat scientific tests and results. I think most folk, including myself, put Prem juice in their tanks because of the “feel good” factor with the added hope it will indeed do something worthwhile

The science shows V-Power petrol gives added bhp/performance especially on a turbocharged engine.

As a vanity I only use V-Power petrol in my sports car, however every now an then I have had to use cheap standard fuel. The strange thing is the cheap and nasty fuel has normally given me extra mpg with no noticeable loss of performance.

However I still feed it V-Power MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

I've used bog standard supermarket diesel albeit with millers eco max in since I bought the car 70k miles and near 6 years ago. No issues. Drives fine.

I just use regular shell diesel. Its on my work commute but have never put the posh diesel in and it’s a 2.7 so slow enough. I get 28 mpg and good emissions at the MOT. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

I'm still of the opinion that the fuel used is less of an issue than how you drive the vehicle. Short runs, never getting it properly warm, or long periods sat idling in heavy traffic, are not going to be great for the engine or emissions kit. Driving it for 30 minutes on the open road will ensure everything gets up to temperature, that the emissions devices are able to self-clean, etc., more than the additives in the fuel will.

Correct servicing with the correct oil and quality filters, etc., will do more to improve the life of the vehicle than putting in a particular brand of fuel. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Driving style is for me the biggest issue. I always use supermarket fuel with REDEX added, in my TDV8, and did likewise in my D3 TDV6.

BUT now that I drive on longer journeys and higher speeds and almost zero traffic, my performance of fuel consumption have dramatically improved.

London - felt sluggish - 22 mpg at best.

Highlands - as a TDV8 should be - 32 mpg - and I have a heavy right foot.

Also Disco Mikey has renewed the EGR’s, flushed the gearbox, and Ive sorted a sticky Turbo actuator, sp Thumbs Up Whistle Rolling with laughter

And it’s serviced on time every year. Previously owned 1999 Disco 2 TD5
Disco 3 HSE TDV6 2007
Gone 2007 TDV8 RRS1 in Buckingham Blue.

How do know if the knocking at the front has been sorted?

You can hear the knocking at the rear better

I use supermarket fuel. but after reading a rather long article on here a year or two ago, I add a 300ml of semi-synthetic 2 stroke to a tank of fuel. No problems, supposed to lube the injector rail. Don't know if its any better than Snake oil, but I'm happy with it Whistle Car is fast as Censored Rolling with laughter
