Replacement of Running Boards

I've got original Land Rover running boards on my Sport, which have been on the car from new and were on the original spec sheet.

My N/S running board is now a bit rusty underneath and bits are crumbling away. The actual stepping board and the silver metal frame still look good but its definitely time to replace it ( It may be the crumbling underside that's causing the high speed road noise that I posted about?)

I wanted to know if anyone can tell me how these were originally fitted and if they leave any holes that weren't already part of the chassis?

I am thinking of maybe taking them off altogether if this doesn't leave any rust traps or just trying to find the N/S one and swap it with a new or used one?

If anyone has a good N/S board for a 2012 car then I'd consider buying it Smile

I took a set off a previous sport, just bought a few 8mm x 25mm stainless steel setscrews, bit of copper slip, and just screwed them back in the threaded holes where the brackets were previously fitted, no problems.

Cheers

As Col says, take the brackets off and put the bolts back in the holes with a bit of copperslip until such time as you find some replacements. Best way to keep the holes clean. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

This is how they are fitted, it will give you an idea of what's underneath (won't be as new and clean as this though, you may need to get the Hammerite out)

Thanks everyone. That's helpful.

Yes good idea.. if I fit new ones I am going to coat the bottom of them with some hammerite. I bet I will have some fun trying to get the old ones off! I cant imagine there will be many screwheads left Laughing

Hi Pete, you can buy a set of new, aftermarket steps for £99.99 with free delivery from TurboRevs... https://turborevs.org.uk/side-steps-runnin...sport.html

I had these on my L320. I think a few other forum members also have them after I posted about them previously.

I'd definitely recommend giving them a good paint over the undersides with hammerite prior to installation to maximise the life. Kev

When I took the steps off my TDV8 I found the process to be straight forward. And they'd been off road too so probably more yuck forced around the fixings than most. I certainly don't remember it being a difficult job. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

If they are genuine L/R boards you might find they are already stainless steel bolts fitted which should make it easier, I fitted a set of genuine L/R steps to my current sport and sure the kit came with stainless bolts.

As Kev has said,, turborevs are as good as you'll get for the money. Fitted a set a few months ago to mine as the old ones were rotten. I did coat mine with Hammerite but it didn't take too well to whatever paint is already on so I would try priming them first. 2010 RRS, TDV8

That's brilliant thanks everyone.

I am going into Promec in Cardiff next week so will have a good look when the car is in the air.

I think the rotten board is definitely the cause of my noise at speed. I removed some of the rotten metal and it has made a difference to the noise, its made it worse!

I'll have a look at the new boards.

I need to check my original brochure to see if the HSE came with the boards as standard or were specced as an extra. I know mine had them on from new but I am considering removing them altogether for a slightly cleaner look. I am sure the Mrs will complain though and I'll have another noise coming from the passenger side!! Laughing Laughing Laughing

The Turborevs boards look great Thumbs Up

Decent price too. Cheaper than some are trying to sell used on ebay!

What does everyone think about removing them completely?? is that wrong for an HSE? Confused

I use mine but could manage without it but my wife is vertically challenged and requires hers to get in all though she never uses it to get out.

That’s a good price £20 less than their charging through eBay, can’t believe what people are asking for these second hand £70 a side and there pretty rusty!

I’ll have to write to Santa Very Happy Steve

Hi Steve

Yes that's what I saw, there are boards on ebay which cant be much less rusty than mine and people want a fortune for them.

If the Turborevs ones come recommended on here and are £99 a set then its really a no brainer as they say. Plus they look OEM which is what you want really.

I wouldn't have the nerve to sell my old ones to anyone, FOC or in the skip I think.

Completely agree Pete, wouldn’t dream of trying to sell mine on Shocked if there was anything left of them when I’ve cut them off Laughing

Mine are “hanging” in there at the moment I’m hoping to do a full cam belt change over Xmas so funds are going there.

The wife’s not asked me what I want for Xmas yet Wink Steve

We just got back from walking the dog and whilst walking I laid it on thick about the road noise being irritating and needing
new running boards, how much, where to get them and how they were recommended on the forum.. Whistle Whistle

Not an easy thing to hide under the tree though! Pete
