2006 Petrol V8 4.4 (maybe 4.2)

Morning everyone
Been absent for many years since the sale of my 2.7 HSE.

But sold my daily last weekend and am very taken with the idea of a Petrol V8 🙈

My crank snapped on my 2.7 so am thinking I’d rather pay some extra at the pumps, as I guess LR will have now stopped paying paying out on that fault !

So aside from the usual RRS issues would anyone be up for some links or words on what I’m letting myself in for

One car we are looking is 135k miles the other is 100k both claim to have history
And there is a slightly dearer 4.2 with 72k

Mpg am I going to see mid 20s on motorway at 60 or is that a dream !

If you get 20 mpg I think that would be very lucky.
13 mpg average I understand

Biggest worry is the gearbox.
I think I would pay a premium for a low Milage gearbox
And then change the oil

20'S is possible if you drive like miss daisey i used to get mid 17's more often than not and single figures when you hoof it which is so easy to do as the noise is so intoxicating lol Thumbs Up

Car we drove today did sound sweet!

Gearbox had had an oil service but wasn’t working in command shift mode....is that the sign of more serious issues, it changed fine when in D

Despite this, tempted !

You can get this mpg from a 5.0L if you try hard enough. Rolling with laughter

Command shift issue is likely to be electrical

I think I personally would be cautious of buying a vehicle with any known transmission fault, a possible worst case scenario could be the Transmission Control Module which is part of the main control control valve in the actual gearbox which could set you back a couple of K, or could be simple as oil contamination or corrosion on the electrical harness multiplug terminals where it connects to the transmission sump. I would certainly be asking for the fault codes to be read first.

Cheers

I can't speak to the RRS as ours is an sdv6 but I regularly get over 20mpg on my d3 v8 on a run without too much effort - thats an NA ajv8 4.4. I don't drive it hard to be fair but i'm well in with the traffic speed on a run and the D3 is much more of a brick than the RRS 2012 SDV6 HSE (technically its hers)
2000 D2 TD5 - definitely mine

I have been running a 4.2 SC for just about 3 years, if i am really sensible on the motorway i can get 17mpg. But the car will tempt you not to be sensible, and you should go with it. It is without doubt my favourite vehicle after 30 years of car ownership, i probably should change it but i just don’t know what I would replace it with. Bite the bullet, go for the lower mileage option, get all of the suggested maintenance done and enjoy it.

one thing i forgot to say about the 4.2, for christ sake avoid lpg at all costs. i know you might be tempted by like 56p a litre but honestly the cost of maintaining and fixing issues with it makes the whole endeavour pretty pointless imo.

You say that but i had my lpg serviced on mine twice and was only About £50 each time but never had any issue's so maybe i was lucky and it was nice to use both petrol and gas and get over only just mind 400 miles without going to fuel station Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

theres the whole valve seat issue. tbh i feel like i want too much from the lpg, ie i want lpg from 600rpm to redline haha while most swap to petrol at the top.

but to list my lpg issues, bought car, ran fine on lpg. great.

then turns out valves are toast, so basically top end rebuild. after that lean codes still occur. so i put in a stag system since i wanna run to redline, no dice the reducer i had even though rated for 400bhp can't support it and drops in pressure.

currently during cut off i have too much pressure haha

and tbf i fill up 1 tank of lpg for every quarter tank of petrol i have. so i normally get 200 miles on petrol, then lets say 150 on lpg, so 800 miles for 300quid.

2005 4.2L Supercharged Java Black - gone but was my first love.

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?
