Coolant ..... HEEEEELP!!!

Hi all,

Great to be back (new username....cant sort my original?!)

Anyway...it's been a while.

I was the owner of a Landy/Rangie Specialist....but myself and biz partner went our separate ways, along with my "trusty" RRS 4.2 Supercharged.

What a journey we've had. I have owned it for 9 years, am the 2nd owner and have done 80k miles in it. It's been brilliant, but truth be told....I kept it too long. It's now worth peanuts....cant be replaced without spending HUGE sums and so, I've decided to keep it forever (or until it becomes uneconomical to fix....one day...?).

For the first time ever....today.....I noticed the rock steady coolant gauge, shoot up all of a sudden, after noticing (what I thought was somebody else!) coolant on the floor....just a bit.....whilst at a shop. As I was near home....I continued on until the gauge wasp about 3/4 of the way. Then switched off. I noticed steam from under the bonnet. A quick look, revealed it was from the top of the engine. Shocked

I got the dog out, my little girl too and went for a short walk, to allow it to cool down. When I got back, I switched on the ignition and noted the coolant temp in the bottom 1/4. Happy days Thumbs Up I started it up and drove it gently toward home. The gauge stayed solidly in the middle again....and it got me the few miles home. I was in the middle of nowhere and had no fluid to put in there.

I reversed onto the drive and noticed a small trail of fluid on the floor. Again i let it cool, popped the bonnet and took the shroud and supercharger intake off and found some coolant on top of the pump.....but cant see anywhere obvious that it may have come from?

So, is it worth changing the pump and thermostat and hose from the top as a starting point?

Heres the photo's.....you can see the coolant pooled on top of the pump (?)







Any ideas? Is it easy to remove the pump?

As i said, I owned a Landy specialist....but to be clear....I didn't swing spanners, but can when forced!! LOL All help from you wonderful and knowledgeable folk is welcomed....I'm in W Berks if you want to come and fix it!! Smile

Think there was a problem with supercharger pumps being incorrectly wired on early 4.2s, might not be your problem but if you search on here for’ supercharger pump‘ you should find some info. which could be useful. Good luck and let’s us know how you get on.

Best off in the general or tech forum for future ref. Not everyone pops in here.


Supercharger pumps are electric and off to the side.
I think the main water pump is there.

Note the route of the supercharger belt and take pics.
Remove the sc belt. You need a 1/2” breaker bar to put into the tensioner square hole.
Leaver over and take the belt off. You may need to take the tensioner off with a 13mm socket to get the belt off.

Now you can get a better view.
Take a pic of the next belt now. That route is complex

Take the car for a run round the block and then let it idle on the drive. And see if you can now see the leak.

If you want to change or take the water pump off. Remove the aux belt. Similar to before except the route is complex.
Change water pump.

Nb the temp gauge is a false gauge. They stay at mid point until it’s very hot and then they shot up

This is a slightly older engine without SC but may give you pointers






Course you also have the viscous fan on the RR

Andy....thanks a lot....I'll have a look. So the main water pump is off the belt and there is an additional water pump elsewhere? Course there is....why make things simple?! I'll repost on the other forum page too. Thanks for the pointer

The electric pump is for the supercharger charge cooler.
