What to buy?

Hi new member here! Been looking at an early rrs. I have around 6k to spend. Have heard alot of horror stories about the 2.7 diesel, howver i work 6 days a week and would only use the car on my day off, with the mrs occasionally using it during the week.

My question is, what is the one to look at within my budget? I have seen the 4.2 supercharged models for around this. I am looking for a family/ comfortable car as i already have a c63 merc and have no intention of selling up.

Any help welcomed!

A £6k RRS is going to be pretty tired, to be honest. Take your time and find one with a huge pile of receipts that show things like suspension bushes having been done, gearbox flushed etc. And be prepared for bills as things will doubtless need doing to it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for taking the time to reply. What are the costly repairs for a rrs? Have heard about air suspension etc. But i assume consumables like brakes and tyres are expensive anyway!

Hi i bought mine not long ago and milage use probably a lot less than most odd popping to shops and taking dogs to local park maybe 2k in miles a year in a 2007 2.7 Hse it had 128k mile on the clock 1 owner from new full FSH just under 7k so far bar service costs and looking to get gearbox flush no more expense than any other motor i have owned, i do live in my works van a transit custom i bought from new 4 years ago which has now 250k miles on the clock and with that have the oil changed at half what the manufacturer recommends no problems so far, bar wear and tear which to be far is very little.

As with the RRS if buying an old one try and get one that has been looked after and cared for as i believe that will save you thousands for you in the long run, if looked after just have a peek on here as to how many miles 2.7 diesels have clocked well over 100k in miles i think there are many more higher mileage 2.7 than any other RRS.

Good look with getting the right one

Hi mate thanks for the reply.

Do you think the 2.7 is overly slow? I know there not built for speed but at 190 bhp and over 2 tonnes? And ideally id like the diesel because of the mrs but who can beat the sound of a roaring v8 and supercharger to boot!

There not fast fast but surprisingly quick when you put your foot down, saying that if you want quick go for the V8 SC and the noise is better if don't mind the more frequent trips to the petrol station. i get about 18-20 mpg out of the V6, i believe the V8 SC can be under 10 mpg.

The 2.7 is slow, there's no other word for it. If you're happy to waft aling then it's fine. If you want a bit of poke for the occasional blast or for easy overtaking, then it's lacking.

If it has to be diesel and you want some performance then the TDV8 is the answer. I'm not sure what £6k would in one of those, however.

Best to buy the 4.2 and tell the wife not to put diesel in it! Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

This doesn’t sound like it’s going to end well.

You aren’t going to get a decent car for 6k,
There will be money that needs spending on it, and they aren’t cheap to run or upkeep.

Keep us updated but I d imagine you may need to adjust your budget abit if possible.

Thanks all for your replys, i knew id not get anything newer than perhaps an 07 plate
I dont mind spending a bit on it but of course dont want to spend thousands and thousands on a car that just isnt worth doing it on. I also think auto trader is a bit misleading! Theres at least 50 rrs on there under 6k and within a decent range of my postcode. But i guess there the usual crap. Any ideas where to look for a decent one?

If not i may have to sod the budget and spend double on a better one 😂

Keep your eyes peeled on this forum and one will likely turn up followed by a dozen more. The petrols appear to be a lot more forgiving and with the exception of fuel, are cheaper to run. My last service on a 5.0 SC was £200 cheaper than the quoted (independent) cost of the TDV8 (he based his estimate on the TDV8 as he doesn’t see many petrols). I then spent that on replacing the rear brake lines. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Get petrol for reasons above and your low mileage
Get one off here
Get one with proven service history and a wad of receipts

This has to be the most active forum ive ever been a part of! 😀
Ive mostly seen the 2.7 diesels on there, a few 3.8s and 5 or 6 sc ones.
My mileage isnt the issue, i have a van for work and a toy for when i have my time.
However i imagine the overall costs of diesels and services line up with the sc variant. As said above.
Just dont want a huge petrol bill everyweek from a mrs who has her own cars.
