Those all seasons are taking much longer braking distance than proper summer or for the season now the winter tires.
I would never again use all seasons on such a heavy car... 2012 RRS HSE SDV6, BOURNVILLE 12/12-10/14

This is an interesting test. In the dry, summer tyres are best even in the cold. In wet winter weather, all season tyres are probably best. On snow/ice, , well, that's been done before and should be fairly obvious (though the difference is not huge between winter and all-season).

In the southern UK, where we get snow one or two days a year occasionally and most days it's way above freezing, I'm sticking with all-seasons on all my cars that are used year round.

The Pirelli's aren't the best all-season for grip though, but I believe the wear rate is good. I think it's more dry biased and doesn't have the mountain/snowflake marker.

Hi,
Totally agree with Syl ^

I would be looking at AT3's or crossclimates I have run true Winters but think for most of the time All seasons would be best

If it’s cold outside without snow or ice, just wet or dry, even then all-seasons are less good in grip than proper winters...
It’s all about the rubber/silica mix for cold conditions, it is impossible to get a rubber working perfect in +40 and same time -10.

Does anybody wear the same outerwear or shoes in the cold as in the warm climate? If this would work, it where fantastic.

But the myth of a 4x4 fine on all seasons below 5 degrees will never die... 😉 2012 RRS HSE SDV6, BOURNVILLE 12/12-10/14

If I was to keep with the sport long term I would probably opt for a set of 22" rims with summer tyres & then go for 21" with winters & just change them as & when. Andy.

The move to "winter-rated summer tyres" such as the Michelin CrossClimate is likely to work well in countries like the UK where, most of the time, it's cold and wet in winter rather than icy and snowy. Sure, Scotland and some upland areas elsewhere in the UK get decent ice and snow, but for most of the population a full winter tyre is probably overkill.

If people would fit something like the CrossClimate all year round, we could get away from the silly situations we see where the motorways are gridlocked. Away from scenes on the news of people unable to drive up the slightest incline on urban roads.

You'll never get wholesale adoption of winter tyres in the UK - the drivers of all those cars on PCP deals, for example, won't be forking out for extra wheels/tyres for cars they can barely afford the payments on in the first place. But if tyres were fitted, as standard, that matched the CrossClimate's proven abilities, the country would be better off in winter.

All of the above is not applicable to countries / areas that have "proper" winter conditions for significant periods of time, of course. They need winter tyres. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

There are a few trials that say the opposite, with All season tyres braking shorter than Winters on wet and dry cold roads, its when there is snow and ice that the Winters come more into their own.

I was going to say the CorssClimate SUV but then I remembered you're on 21 inch rims and they only go up to 20.

I'd probably go for the Pirelli Verde all season as in your original post. Not much choice in that size so far as a quick google goes. It's the tyre that LR fit to their range in many cases so probably works well with the on board systems too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Did you watch the video?

Summer tyres (never mind all-season tyres) stopped quicker in dry conditions than winter tyres even down to 0 degrees.

All-season tyres stopped quicker than winter tyres in wet conditions down to 2 degrees.

Winter tyres were better in the snow. RRS MY17 SDV6 AB

I run Conti Sport contacts in the summer and Pirelli scorpion winters for the winter. If I was going to run an all season it would be the Pirelli Scorpion Verde, but That’s just personal preference as I found they had a more direct turn in. Out of interest where are you based? I have a set of almost new cross contacts which I think are in the right size and would be keen to get rid of them at a discounted price.

My present car came on Pirelli Scorpion Verde tyres rather the the Michelin of the previous car. I mucgh prefer the feel of the Pirellis. For winter I use the Scorpion Winter tyres as we visit the area around Geneva quite frequently and winters are mandatory in the area. The big drawback of the winter tyres is in my opinion the big negative effect on fuel consumption, I reckon they lose me 3mpg. Do others share the same observation? Tim
