Disco 4.5 / RRS 2 wing mirrors on a 2005 to 09 Sport

I was asked by Emmett on the Disco 3 site for some direction on fitting D4.5 mirrors to his Disco 3 and as the Disco 3 wiring is near identical to the early Sport, I thought I would see if there was any interest on the Sport forum.

Would there be an interest? I’m more than happy to put the details here if so.

Ok, I’ll put something together as it’s pretty simple if you can take thing apart and do basic soldering. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Hi BritPlumber,

Did you get round to drafting up the how to for this.

I'm looking to replace my 06 wing mirrors either with lr4.5 or lr4 mirrors, however before taking the plunge and buying the mirrors would like to know what's involved in the electrical side.

With the lr4 mirror without side indicators is it straight plug 'n' play or do connectors need swapping and wires soldering?

For the lr4.5 mirrors obviously need to wire in the indicators, what else is required electrically?

Would love to know as the newer mirrors do look better in my opinion, and would be a nice enhancement.

Cheers 👍🏼

I haven’t as yet, work is getting in the way of lockdown time.

I can however talk you through it as it requires the loom in the mirror to have some minor modifications. You may as well go for the 4.5 mirrors as they need the same mods as the 4 (but with that extra wire for the indicator). 2012 5.0 SC AB

Ok great thanks Brit Plumber, I've found LHD LR4 mirrors with power fold, now to try and find reasonably priced 4.5 mirrors before I can start this 'adventure' 🤣😂

If you could explain the alterations then I can at least plan ahead whilst trying to get a 2014 cupholder to fit in an 06 Sport which is proving challenging...

Thanks for the help👍🏼

Here’s a start, I’ve listed the wires by plug, first is the 4.5 plug followed by the early RRS plug, I've assumed the 4.5 mirrors have indicators so added that pin on. There is am issue with some wiring which needs you to go into the mirror and do some work. Basically the Disco 3/early RRS has a powerfold module which the Disco 4 dispensed with as it was combined in to the door module. LR then combined one of the movements with the power fold out wire so it performed 2 tasks. This wont work on a disco 3 or early RRS so it requires the soldered joint to be unsoldered. Then a new wire soldering in and connecting to a free space on the disco 4 mirror plug and the existing wire in the disco 3 loom placed into the corresponding door connector.

So below is the good to go connections but pins 3 and 4 we will need to adapt in to 3 wires. It's not as daunting as it sounds if you can strip the 4.5 mirrors down to get to the wiring loom. Pin 3 Yellow/Blue on the Disco 3 /RRS door loom is the wire that we need to connect with one of the de-soldered wires.

1. Red/White to 1. Black/Pink
2. Light Green to 2. Green/White (Silver/White on diagram?)
3. Blue to 3. Black/Blue (Not yet as it will cause issues)
4. Pink to 7. Yellow/Red (Not yet as it will cause issues)
5. Black/Grey to 4. Brown/Purple
6. Black/Blue to 5. Black (0.75mm diameter)
7. Yellow/Red to 1. Red
8. White to 2. Green
9. Brown to 4. Yellow
10. Grey to 3. Black (0.5mm diameter)
11. Dark Green to 8. (Approach/puddle lamp)
12. Indicator positive. 2012 5.0 SC AB

So pin 3 on the disco 4 mirror plug has 2 functions, power fold out and the Y axis movement. We need to separate those functions out in to 2 wires. if you keep Pin 3 as the Y axis so it matches your disco 3/early RRS loom you just need to separate the powerfold wire (Could be by finding the soldered joint in the mirror loom or just by cutting it where you can get to it and attaching a new wire to the PF motor side of the cut) this wire will now need to run in the mirror loom down to the plug and fitted to a free space and matched to the disco 3 door loom yellow/blue fold out wire.

Effectively you are introducing a new wire to the fold out motor and attaching to the yellow/blue wire of your disco 3 door loom.

If you can get an old door harness from D3, D4 or RRS you can salvage the pins for the indicator and you could salvage a wire from your old mirrors for the 4.5

So what you need to do is decide how you want to connect the mirror loom to the door loom. Easiest and cheapest is probably to swop the door connector for a later Disco 4 or 10 to 12 sport connector.

The JLR pt number of the black Disc 4/late sport door to mirror connector is YPC500910, I’ll try and find the PIN numbers. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Cheers Brit Plumber,

Will look into that, vey useful and looks doable for even for me. Thanks for taking the time.

Can you tell me if LHD and RHD LR4.5 wing mirrors are identical? The reason I ask is that Stateside and elsewhere the newer mirrors are about GBP800 a pair compared to GBP 400 for the older type.

The search continues.

Thanks again

They are different, the frame is angled more towards the driver on that side so the problem would be that if you fit RH mirrors to a LHD car, by the time you have the lens at the correct angle, there would be a big open gap on the outside edge. What you could do is look on eBay Uk for cheap basic D4.5 mirrors and then look out for cheap L405 LHD mirrors in the UK and make a good set. JLR obviously dumped a lot of L405 LHD mirrors (USA, Canada and Middle East spec) on the UK market a few years back. I think I still have some that I removed the motor from. I’ll take a look if you’re interested. 2012 5.0 SC AB

Guy, I don't know if it will help or not, but when I changed mine a few years back I bought new D4.5 mirrors from L/R although that was to convert a 2010-13 RRS1, unfortunately there a 22 different R/H/D versions listed and equivalent number L/H/D versions not all powerfold etc. etc. mind you probably find the main differences are a couple of extra holes or wires and lots of £'s knowing L/R. Laughing The one's I used were just powerfold, with approach lights and camera, no lane departure, wading, blind spot etc. The L/H/D version Part No's of the ones I used are LR051371 R/H and LR051373 L/H but thought it might help you track a pair down. Also if you do buy s/hand make sure they are D4 not Discovery Sport as some of the adds are a little confusing.
Unfortunately L/R do not sell the mirrors complete that's just the shell so may not help finding a complete used ones. I dread to think what they would be new from L/R now I paid around £300.00 each for the shells and that was best part of four if not five years ago. I think it worked out around 1k to do both complete mirrors. I guess based on the price of parts here the spare pair of complete new one's I brought here with me if I don't use them will work put as a investment. Laughing

Cheers
Col

Good point on the Disco 5 mirrors. The only brackets that fit are Disco 4.5, the frames are the same for 4.5, L405 and L494.

There is a good assumed LHD drive mirror here (spain) but....the listing doesn’t give spec (and I can’t see on photo) and postage is expensive

That certainly looks like the right mounting Guy needs Chris, the problem is that is off a SE and that part number does not say it's a powerfold mirror, just a basic mirror with no extras, where as on the numbers I quoted as example's specifically say's fold back which with so many variations make it very hit and miss.

D4 Mounting

L405 & L494 Mirror mounting totally different shape and will not bolt directly to the L320 door. Although the actual head unit can be changed but means he has to buy two pairs of mirrors, to make one pair.

Cheers
Col
