United Kingdom
2.7 or 3.6

Just about to purchase my first and long awaited RRS, been on loads of sites and finally found this one, so here goes. I have settled on a 2007/8, big big question for me has always been 2.7 or 3.6, I have heard so many bad stories about the 2.7 but less so the 3.6. I would greatly appreciate any advice to help make my mind up.

To be honest I think both models suffer from the same problems overall. Engine wise the 2.7 is more prone to EGR valve issues than the 3.6, but the 3.6 might have more issues with turbo's. My indie told me they saw more sized 2.7 models than most others,,,, even the 3ltr with the dreaded crank issue. It's a case of finding a well looked after example that has been regularly serviced and hope for the best and be prepared to fork out for suspension and brakes etc. Keeping the EPB serviced could save you a good amount if it were to fail. 2010 RRS, TDV8

The 2.7 V6 years you are looking at have an issue where the oil pump housing casting tended to break causing the engine to be totaled. If you you look for one make sure it is documented that is has been changed to a revised part, easy enough to do when doing the cam belt. And of course they can snap their crankshafts.
The V8 is generally considered to be a nicer engine, but can have turbo issues around the 100k mark (not had one myself, but have a search on here) which are expensive to replace (they have 2). And of course are worse on fuel consumption, which I suppose is relative for a big heavy 4x4.
Have a look on here for general advice regarding what else to look out for when buying one of these complicated cars.
Good luck.

I myself would go for the tdv8 seeing as I’ve had 2 but mine were relatively new when I bought them,if I was looking for one now it would have to have very good history with regular oil changes as the turbos are expensive when they go,plus the suspension issues they have. Andy.

Also don't forget to check the gearbox. I don't think it's in LR's service plan, but as it approaches 100K miles, I would recommend a flush. Also drive up a hill and accelerate from slow speed. If it judders when warm, then it could be the gearbox. a complete new one is £3K, though often it's just the torque converter, that's about £1400.

3.6 every time. The 2.7 is a bus. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I've had no problems with my TDV6, but if I was to buy another, I think I would go for the supercharged (petrol). They seem to have much fewer problems.

In fairness, I had a 2.7 D3 (OK so a bit heavier) but my 3.0ltr RRS is noticeably quicker. Probably the extra 50 horses.
I think the later L494's had about 300bhp. Depending on your driving style, that may well be enough.
When I win the lottery, the 5.0 SC will be on my shopping list though Very Happy
