Handbrake stuck on

Hi all.

Could somebody help. I am wanting to get under the centre console on my 2012 RRS as the EPB is making a screeching noise and stuck on. I was told that I could pull the cable to release it. But I am not sure how to get under the console.
Any help would be appreciated.

I’m sure it’s under the cup holder behind the gear knob. Andy.

I have the same 2012my with rotary gear selector. On your 2012 if you look in the centre console there are two removeable cup holders. Take them out- can be an effort. Access flap will then be visible. Open. The release mechanism can require a hefty yank mind.

Thanks for all the help.
Discovered that you remove the small plastic bit infront of the actual handbrake lever and they're is two screws. Take these out and you can then remove the actual lever itself. From here I was able to get down and hook onto the cable and release the handbrake.
The red warning light now continues to flash. Do I just put up with this until I repair the EPB or is there away of resetting/turn off.
Thanks again for your help and suggestions.
Cheers
Ian

Won't hurt to put up with it,,, but get it repaired ASAP, I think you were reasonably lucky getting the emergency release to operate,,, not always guaranteed!. Hopefully it can be cleaned up and readjusted. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Well you got it done but the easier way is under the cupholder... Maybe best if you pop in your local indy specialist, epb issues are not unusual and they should be able to diagnose quickly.

With the 12MY it’s not that easy to get to the release tab through the cup holders, especially if the cable is tight. Best thing to do is get the Screw Driver out of the boot kit, pop the CD slot cover using the flat blade in the bottom and levering up gently (plastic lever is best but the Screw Driver works in an emergency), remove the 2 Philips screws. Then pull the back of the whole console up (it’s on lots of clips) which can take a good tug. The wiring is long enough by design so that you can rotate it up at the back to remove it and then flip it over and rest on the passenger seat. You then have loads of room to get to the cable tab and get the jack handle onto it with out fear of trashing anything.

The SC requires the removal of the gear stick but that again is easy and doesn’t need any tools.

It takes about 2 minutes tops to do it this way. 2012 5.0 SC AB

I had no problem via cup holder route. Dismantling the centre console seems a bit extreme.

There wasn’t a hope in hell of getting to mine through the cup holder. I followed directions and videos and found nothing. When I took the console out I could see why, it’s located under the EPB switch. Further digging on the internet revealed many more 2012 owners in the same boat. 2012 5.0 SC AB

We clearly have had different experiences but the cupholder route should be tried first and probably works for the majority with no problem at all and they ate understandably not posting about it. It is a lot less involved. Stuck at the side of the road would be no place to take out the console as was my experience. For most if you can't do the cupholder route you need to call recovery or get your indy involved.

Seem to be a lot of varying opinions how best to do this, but the cup holder is removed on L/H/D vehicles to release it according to L/R workshop manual, but not having had to do it wouldn't really know for sure.

In the center console, a pull ring is installed on the end of the inner cable. The pull ring is designed to fit the hook on
the end of the jack handle which, in combination with a screwdriver shaft, can be used to pull on the cable. The pull
ring can be accessed by removing a circular panel in the bottom of the center console cupholders, on left-hand drive
(LHD) vehicles, or by removing the parking brake switch on right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles.
The pull required to release the latch is approximately 200 N (45 lbf).

Cheers
Col

Same on RHD models worked fine for me. Under the cupholder.
