SDV8 or SDV6 Warmup

Quick one the SDV8 4.4 or the SDV6 3.0 guess it doesn't really matter which one.

Should you wait until the engine gets up to temperature before getting handy with the revs.

What revs should you keep either engine under until its up to temperature thanks.

Yes,,to be honest it should be done with any engine especially ones fitted with turbo's petrol or diesel. Also when you are ready to stop the engine its advisable to drive the last mile with low revs to allow the oil to drain from the turbo.

Agree. Being mechanically sympathetic is always a good idea. Get it up to operating temp before booting it, that's under ten mins/5 miles for me in an SDV6, typically 1500 to 2000 rpm (typical shift points for the box anyway on a fairly normal commute), and if people aren't seeing it hit warmed up/gauge in the middle then they are probably not doing enough miles, definitely in a diesel and probably in a petrol too: frequent cold starts and not running at normal operating temp is not good for engines.

Agree also after a good thrash run in last mile or so lower revs eg 1500 to 2000 and/or idle for a minute at stop. Don't just pull up and switch off. Turbos do not like that. And you will not like the bill for replacing them as it is a body off job on certainly the RRS1, think circa 4k if you are lucky and have a good indy, 2 turbos is acparts bill alone of £2.5 to £3k alone.

This has stood me well over years of petrol and diesel cars, including Saabs and RRS.

Get an coolant / oil temperature reading via IID tool or similar and work out what distance you need to drive before the engine gets to operating temperature, as the car's temperature gauge is fairly useless.

As an example: I have the Madman EMS in my Puma, and the car's temp gauge goes to the middle within 2km of my house, but the coolant temp only goes to 89C about 12km from home.

Once the car is nicely warmed up, you can drive it a bit harder. I also recommend that once/twice a week you really give it some beans, especially if there's a long uphill - that will keep the engine in tip top shape. With the new cars, put it in Sand mode and drive it like you stole it Thumbs Up

And as mentioned in the previous posts, drive the last 2-3km very gently, letting the turbo cool down. --

that's not nearly enough time for the oil to get up to operating temp... I'll plug my IID and monitor the live oil temp and report back on the distance it takes to get warm. --

Interesting topic and some interesting answers which is cool!

Yesterday was driving my car - got in it around 6/7pm so it had been sat in the heat all day but not used.

If the ambient temperature outside is very hot (31C+ in London) will that make the engine heat up a lot quicker as my car was apparently up to temperature in a few mins - much quicker than I normally notice say if I use it first thing in the morning!

Also cool advice on the 2000rpm - what if you accidentally go up to 3000rpm or so? Won't do any damage if its once in a blue moon, no?

Is that advice also for the SDV8 as it gets to 2000rpm very quickly!!!

Cool

the SDV8 (and Im sure the SDV6) gets to 2000rpm pretty quickly !!

Will it damage it if you go to 3000/3500rpm once in a blue moon ?

Also do engines in general heat up a lot quicker if the car has been sat in a hot environment (30C+) all day ?

31C is very hot? Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Yes, the higher the ambient temperature and the longer the car has sat outside, the quicker the oil & coolant will reach operating temps.

Accidentally revving it is not a biggie, as long as you don't do it for a sustained period of time. --

For example, it's 13C outside right now, and you can see how the oil & coolant temps are almost the same as ambient (my car has been sitting in the garage overnight).

I'll post a photo of the same parameters once it's warmed up and let you know how long it took. --

Whatever the ambient temp is on a sunny day, tin boxes do get very warm after constant exposure to heat, hence getting in a car on a hot day the heat hits you before you can get your air con on. If it works Smile

25 degrees would be a good warm day in Edinburgh. Its all relative, I prefer the lower temperatures myself from around minus 5 to plus 20. Too much into the mid 20's I find personally uncomfortable if for too extended a time.

from the Workshop Manual, it looks like the operating temperature should be 96C:

Quote:
The thermostat is closed at temperatures below approximately 82°C (179°F). When the coolant temperature reaches
approximately 82°C the thermostat starts to open and is fully open at approximately 96°C (204°F). In this condition the
full flow of coolant is directed through the radiator.
