I now need 2 rear brake callipers as mine are siezed. I`ve emailed Dan at Duckworths but I`ve also looked online and found refurbed ones for around £100 a pair...would they be ok to use.....?

I paid something in the region of £70 each and £50 to fit. They were properly seized and damaged the discs so they also had to be replaced along with pads. Noisy black one

That`s my worry now, I`ve just had new discs and pads...need to sort soon. Steve.

How do you know they are seized?

Unless the brakes are getting very hot it may be less of a problem than you think and hence not quite so urgent? Most of the braking effort is created by the front brakes after all.

If you have a good motor factor nearby they should be able to offer you new calipers or remanufactured calipers at a decent price instantly or with next day delivery.

All the calipers probably need is dismantling, cleaning and reassembling with new seals. Unfortunately most if not all garages can't be bothered with that 'old school' approach and just want to slap on a brand new pair. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I purchased a brand new rear one off ebay for £40 !

No faffing with exchanges.

However I think I have identified the common problem.

Just where the rubber seal starts is a groove in the metal.
Rubbish accumulates in here and prevents everything moving.

Try cleaning this out with a sharp object.
small Screwdriver blade ?

and see if that helps. You could try one side.


Paddi: I tried fitting a new piston and seal and only half fixed the problem. Thus have identified the real issue above.

Hi Paddi. When he fitted the discs and pads a while back he freed them off. I asked him to investigate a squeak and that`s when he saw they were seized again. They were getting hot, you could smell them

As you say, there`s a eurocarparts local so I`ve just ordered a pair  Steve.
