There was a big topic on here in regards to the 2 stroke question. My end decision was its better to use high quality fuel and additives such as redex, forte, millers........ with no risk to internal parts or seals. Then risk adding 2 stroke to knacker anything up. Hope this helps Thumbs Up

The whole 2 stroke debate seems to polarise in to two camps: those that ask for proper evidence of its efficacy and those who just say "I did it after reading about it on the internet and I think my engine is quieter so it must be great".

The idea surfaced in the US as far as I can see. The US isn't at the forefront of diesel technology because they don't really use diesel very much outside of niche vehicles. The idea is that as sulphur was reduced the lubricity of the fuel was reduced. Adding 2 stroke oil is supposed to replace the lubricating properties of the sulphur.

If you look at the lubricity of modern UK/EU diesel fuels you will see that the better quality ones already far exceed the requirements of the testing standards for lubricity. The additive packs do the job of the sulphur or two stroke.

Buy the best fuel you can or buy supermarket fuel and a decent self-dosing fuel additive designed for the job. Sticking some 2 stroke oil in based on dosing info received from a forum member of unknown provenance seems, to me at least, to be rather bizarre behaviour.

I generally run BP Ultimate diesel through my TDV8. I'm not putting any 2 stroke oil in the fuel tank, that's for sure, until I'm given scientific evidence that the claims made by these people are actually verifiable, correct and accurate. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

In my opinion,as a qualified design engineer, good quality fuel and good quality oils changed regularly is the best route. Drive with some mechanical sympathy - let it fully warm up before using maximum performance and let it idle for a few seconds before switching off.

I think I would be concerned about a build up of carbon deposits from adding two-stroke oil, rather than the reverse (I haven`t read the report by the way), also, I would have thought extra lubricating oil in the top-end of the engine (some of which contain metallic additive packs) may well damage the oxidation catalyst in the exhaust and certainly will contaminate the diesel particulate filter on Euro 5 engines.

What a zany idea !!

The problem is that many of the opinions and suggestions found on the 'Web' are unsubstantiated and the vested interests and/or the qualifications of those posting aren't usually open to scrutiny. I've not seen any objective and controlled tests from reputable laboratories.

Its worth noting that the vast majority of 2-stroke engines are small capacity and air-cooled (there are a few outboards that are water-cooled) . Air-cooled engines run at much higher surface and combustion temperatures than even modern hi-speed diesels. The lubrication characteristics of the oil is formulated to survive and perform at these higher surface temperature. Consequently the chances are that there will be residue in the exhaust that will be deposited on the vanes of the turbo-charger's compressor and the last thing you want to do on a RRS is to shorten the life of your turbo !

I have used FC two stroke in my LR3, RRS, BMW X5 and Fiat Ducato Motor home, all bought new and in the case of the LR3 for 5 years since its purchase in 2006 and sale in 2011. X5 from 2006 and still have and it gets its dose at every fill.
I have never had a problem and use it for two reasons:
1. Lubrication of the high pressure pump (Many failed including my sons vehicle after sulphur was removed from diesel, a bit more lubrication has upside but no downside that I have experienced)
2. A slightly higher Cetane level which contributes to smoother running.
Can't comment on any other nebulous claims.

2 stroke has various standards applied to it, I use FC but others are happy with FB.
I don't think the brand matters although I always use Castrol. Look for FC which is semi synthetic in the oil spec, I understand FB is mineral oil.

What ratio 2 stroke to fuel do you use Barry?
