2009 TDV8 here, and going well too until today

Its barely been used for the last month and certainly hasnt had a long run in that time

Ive just been out and inadvertently left the key powered up in the ignition whilst the doors are open for a couple of hours

The battery is now dead - it has enough to power the dash and lights but not start it

Questions as follows:

1) Would you advise jumping it from a Mini battery?

2) Wold one of those Halfords battery pack things be OK?

3) Is my battery likely to be OK long term, Im feeling more stupid than worried it may have had it?

If you mean starting from a Mini battery (i.e. a small battery, not quite fully grown ) I would say you may have problems. However, if starting from a Mini (the car) then you will be fine, but allow the mini to run for a while with 2,000 rpm to help charge the LR battery before starting. Then when started, you need to go for a good run to charge it up. it takes about 8-10 hours for a battery to be 98% charged in your RRS.

Get yourself a decent battery charger

Halfords battery pack would probably be OK, IF you've remembered to keep it charged up.

As long as it's not left discharged for a long period of time, your battery should be fine.  Bodsys Brake Bible

It's ben -4 each morning lately, no idea how cold it gets at night but woke up this morning and there is snow everywhere. I don't drive very much so the battery does need a charge but anyways...

So lights on the dash come in, I waited a little but the car won't start. Get a strange electric buzz in the car, interior lights buzz when I turn the ignition but the engine is dead so I'm assuming it's the battery.

Any ideas? Should I just jump start it and it take it for a spin in the snow?

Jump starting and driving around a bit won't charge the battery sufficiently to avoid non starts on subsequent days.

If it has been very cold and the battery is so low on charge there is a possibility it is frozen.

The best thing you can do to prolong life of the battery is remove it from the vehicle and put it in place where the temperature is above freezing (like a garage) and allow it a few hours to thaw. Then fully charge it using a smart charger. You could use an unregulated charger but take care not to overcharge and cause more damage. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I agree that it can only be recovered with a good charge with a proper charger but it will not have frozen in the current UK temps. There is no need in normal circumstances to remove the battery and you can happily charge the battery with it still connected to the vehicle. Driving around to 'charge' a battery does almost nothing.

I forgot we had a charger, so dusted it off and hooked it up to the mains, just going to leave it for a couple of hours now.

I have a sneaky feeling my sister left my rear seat heating on and that's been draining my battery a bit.

Sun is back out and the snow is already melting here.

It will need 10 hours or more, so best to leave it on charge overnight.

The seat heaters go off with the ignition so it won't be that.
