How to recover failed RRS in P with EPB on!

Guy on disco raised an interesting question Shocked

If you could not start due to electrical failure how do you get it out of P and disable the handbrake Sad

Apparently on the disco you can manually release the handbrake as follows but not in the handbook and not sure if similar on RRS Bow down

Its a fairly easy task TBH remove the cup holder as you would to access the handbrake release to the front is a big red lever. Lift up the big red lever use a small coin to unlock and then lift and it whilst applying the brake as if the Handbrake is off the car will now free wheel.

Pictures below with central console remove but easily accessible with cup holder removed and the splash guard underneath it removed.

Pull the red cord first

Use a coin to turn the plastic safety lock then pull the red lever and gearbox will be released from park.

Then pull the Handbrake release just to the rear as usual if required. You now have a freewheeling Discovery you can push drag winch etc.

But what about the gearbox - would you have to put wheels under to move it Confused Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Still hoping for a S2 one day!

Don't know about taking it out of P but you can manually release the parking brake at least on the pre 2010 models. This thread helped me in releasing the park brake on mine when I destroyed the brake shoes last month (thanks Bob).

Ok, you prompted me to investigate. I thought that there must be a way.

Here we go

This is for a pre 2010 RRS, LH drive.

EPB:

remove the 2 cup holders, remove the small round panel at the bottom,

inside you will see a "bicycle brake" wire with a loop, pull it to release the EPB(you might need a hook to make it easier)

Gearbox P position solenoid:

remove the small plastic panel in front of the parking brake lever,

look inside the hole towards the right(you need a flashlight) you should be able to barely make out a white plastic lever. Lift it using a screwdriver(Car key works too) while moving the gear lever
(should be the same on RHD)

P.S. Looking at the pictures, it might be the same on post 2010 '08 RRS TDV8
I converted my diesel RRS to run on an environmentally friendly mixture of caribou fat and baby seals oil

One way to release the EPB you can remove the park brake actuators from the calipers and wind the park brake off manually using torx drive bit.

Cheers

Well every days a learning day😀 I knew about the EPB release but didn’t know you could access it through the cup holder, didn’t know about the park release....do now.

That’s what’s so awesome about forums 😄👍 Steve

Thanks Col but that was not my question.
"If you could not start due to electrical failure how do you get it out of P and disable the handbrake. "
Above explanation is about Disco and I am looking for identical solution but for RRS MY17.

Thanks for your help

Not sure about getting it out of Park, but according to the Workshop Manual that is how you release the L494 EBC if you have electrical failure, it is a totally different setup being electrical operation rather than mechanical as the L320/Disco which is as you say what the previous posts and pictures are referring to.

Found this bit about how to disengage "Park Lock" as well if it helps.

I remember removing the cup holder on my15 & their is a red lever that you can pull,I’m guessing that’s how to take it out of park. Andy.
