Any thoughts on what I should check for if buying at auction, considering you can't test drive ?

...or alternatively any cars you know of that are on offer at reasonable prices ? Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

Just sensible stuff - wait by the car till it's about to go through. When they put the keys in, get it started and give it a bit of revs looking for undue smoke etc. General condition inside should match the mileage etc etc. Operate as many switches as you can in the (very short) time you get. I'd normally look at ex-lease as they will normally have been serviced properly. Other than that it's down to good fortune - and that's why you pay what you pay!!

Problem now is that you are up against dealers who want winter stock so you will probably pay top dollar.

Shocked at Main Dealer Standards !

I haven't had any time to get to an auction and unlikely to with the way work is going at the moment.

So, I headed to my local LR dealer who had 3 RRS's in my price range of £25k to £30k.

I was shocked on two counts with my visit:

1. I test drove one of the two TDV6 cars they had and then the only TDV8. The difference in power between the two was astonishing. I can now see what everyone on here was referring to when recommending the TDV8 Shocked
The TDV8 is the one I now want Twisted Evil

2. The cars the main dealer had were shockingly bad ! I can't belive they are retailing these as Approved Used. This is my first used LR (I have had a brand new LR in the past) compared to many approved used Mercs and BMWs. The Mer and BMW cars are always well presented and look like new which is why I was happy paying a premium. Looking at these approved RRS cars, they were worse than the ones on Joe Bloggs used car lot.

One of the TDV6s had kerbed alloys and dents and scratches all over the body. The other TDV6 was a little better but still had some dents and minor scratches. When I pointed one out to the salesman, he tried to fob it off as nothing serious and if it was him, he would have the car as is because it wouldn't worry him Shocked

The TDV8 though was the worst. Body wise it was probably the best of the three but inside, the drivers door handle was seriously scratched up, the driver's seat leather was badly creased on the bolster near the door and had scratches in it where you could see through to the white base underneath the leather. When I looked at the service book, it was only serviced at independent garages from new. These weren't even LR specialists, just run of the mill VAT registered garages. I know that this is cheaper and is compliant with the LR warranty, but I would have though that as a main dealer, they would only sell cars that had a franchised dealer history !!

Maybe I am being too picky but I really expected much better standards from the LR dealer network on their Approved Used cars. Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)
