Does this box have a filter, i cant seem to locate it on Microcat.

I must admit im not the best when it comes to gearbox components as i try and steer clear of the smelly oil if possibile lol.

Hello Pete,

I surfed around a few zf sites last night , the filter appears to be built into the sump pan....which is plastic by the way.. Shocked
look here..http://www.europeantransmissions.com/
about halfway down the middle of the page it says ..what you should know.

and here for the exploded views.

Having no technical knowledge, but an enquiring mind; VA's car has done far less miles and far less off road (both in amount and difficulty) than many D3s; so why would that be a factor? We haven't seen any thing like this on the D3 site, despite older cars, although I suppose some are manuals. Porsche Cayenne S Diesel 66 Plate

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

I will take the car in next to for LR to look at this. The car has only done 46k and very few of that offroad. I had the drive shaft (Think that's what went - can't remember 100%) replaced a few months ago which might be related. The problem could be a differential but I'm not a tech person so I wouldn't be able to tell you for sure. Fingers crossed that the bill will not be too high. 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

If it is clicking as well VA it might be the prop shaft spline spinning on the final drive unit. It is very common on Freelander and RR Vogue. Sounds more like that than the transmission. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

Given that LR have done a nation wide diff upgrade on the FFRR (from spline to flange) I would agree

Are you sure that the transmission and drive train aren't still covered under warranty (not the standard 4/50 or equivalent in the UK, but the normally longer drive train warranty), and at any rate, the recommended change of filter and oil for the transmission is every 100k miles on the RRS, and the gearbox fluid is EXPENSIVE, so doing it every 20k is going to set you back a fair amount.

Judging by how much they quote to do it here, if it's double that in the UK, I doubt anyone would actually replace it before 100K.

From the maintenance schedules:

Change automatic transmission fluid and filter (10 years)
Change transfer gearbox oil (75k and 150k miles)
Change front and rear axle oil (10 years)
Change locking differential oil (75k and 150k miles PJPR
Cairns Blue HSE
180k Miles of Adventure

They did 2 mods Mart - a tool to line up the diff with porpshaft on front as the angle was seen to be wrong between the two, and then a build mod - but after the mod I had 2 fail with the same problem. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

What would you prefer is the obvious question - a transmission service every 2 years at £80 or a replacement transmission 6 months after warranty expires at a guess I would think around £4000 - £7000

It depends on application if you potter round all day chances are it will be fine.
If you get it stuck in the mud or tow a heavy obstacle behind when do you think - I will now stop for an hour to let the transmission fluid cool down due to the excessive pressure and heat I have just bestowed upom my car??

Your choice. You don't stop playing because you get old, You get old because you stop playing.

Thats interesting Pete,

I looked at loads of oil websites yesterday to see what oils were on offer.

Most state the dexron rated stuff is not suitable and you must use that LR stuff which appears to be re-packaged shell m1375.4

You will need 4 litres but shouldnt we buy 8 litres because of the double flush? (160 quid Big Cry )

Any idea how much the trans sump pan is?
