Tyre wear

My TdV8 has nine and a half thousand miles on it and I have had it for about ten days..and I love the car..it is Censored ing brilliant!
One question/concern..the tyres are looking very worn on the edges and I think they only have a few thousand miles left on them.
Question is..should they be this worn at this mileage? The car has never been off road as far as I am aware.
I can not feel any inbalance when driving at low or high speed, but I do get a bit of a wheel judder at 70-80 mph.I am taking the car back into Stratstones in Bury next week for a couple of glitches and was wondering what to ask about the tyre issue?
I have sold lots of cars myself but never really had much experience with 4x4 so am at a bit of a loss with this and do not know if my tyre wear is excessive or not.
One thing is for sure I do not want to spend £1000 ish on four new tyres on a car that I spent £40,000 on recently!
Advice please?

Regards,
Big(fat)Mat.

Hi Mat ,

The edge wear issue is well documented and is made worse by two things.
1 , soft continental tyres . the wear rating is 280 , i think where as the pirelli is about 420.

I have noticed much less shoulder wear on the pirelli's I have inspected.
Other tyresa re available with a 400+ wear rating for less money than the continental

2. Dynamic response , it keeps the body nice and flat through fast cormers....something has to give so the tyre rolls under a little bit and the edge scrubs off.

Cars with DR will always have more edge wear than those without , particularly N/S/F/..

Several owners (and JE engineering in coventry) swear by the hankook tyres RH06 pattern (wear rating 420ish)
If you look around you should get them for under £100 per corner , try ebaying your size.
some members on the disco3 sister site enjoy the delights of the general grabber uhp which sell for about 90 per corner.
Ive driven a few RRS with hankooks and they have better manners and less noise than the contis you have.

I have a set of contis myself... Big Cry

I'm watching them wear out as we speak..

Good Luck

Mine have completely gone on the outside, tbh only have a few mm left on the whole tyre so need replacing anyway.

Popped to local tyre place who have recommended these:
Vredestein SUV Sessanta

I've read many rave reviews now,
http://www.vredestein.com/Media_Nieuwsberi...ssionID=73

And They've come in at £140 a corner, which for 275/40 20's high performance road tyre imo is a bloody good price.

I asked my dealer to look at the Conti's for uneven tyre wear (especially inner edge of fronts). They tell me that they have a service bulletin from Land Rover saying that "it is a feature of the Conti tyre" that the edges look worn, due to the lack of tread pattern around the edges. I then showed him the winter tyres I used (Nov - April) which had very obviously had all the tread scrubbed off the inner edges. At that point the dealer agreed to do a full 4 wheel alingment check.

I now start my annual search for a true all season 20" tyre, or go back to using winter tyres on 19" rims.

Has anyone tried the following General Grabber all season tyre ?

GRABBER UHP 275/40 R20 106W XL with raised rim rib, BSW, M+S

It looks pretty meaty tread so might achieve the all round performance that I am looking for..... RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

question is, is it just down to the conti's or is the alignment Censored . I found out to my cost after they dealers changed the steering rack and got the alignment totally wrong, by a mere 11 degrees Shocked

this is what they looked like after about 25,000 miles

mmm.......interesting thread.

I had this prob with my first set of Contis but since they spent two days sorting the ball joints, bushes and four wheel alignment I have to say the second set of Contis are wearing a whole lot better on the outer edges.

I tried to persuade my maintenance contract to put Pirelli Scorpians on as I thought they would wear better but they didn't want to know........so I came to the conclusion that I didn't care cos I wasn't paying.......perhaps next time they will change their minds. Laughing TDV6 - gone

Thanks for all your responses on this folks.

I am looking for a good price on four new road only tyres for my car..any ideas?
I have my car in on Monday to check out a wheel wobble before I do anything.

P.S my car has only 10,300 miles on't clock...do you think I may have a warranty claim? 19.1 mpg..who gives a fluck?

ISTR the dealers will only accept a claim for poor alignment up to 10 thousand miles...

Check out Hankook RH06 tyres, should be less than 100 quid per corner.

General grabbers are supposed to be decent but low cost.
Several of the D3 lads use them .

Good luck,

I had the Vredesteins on my Audi RS4. I have only praise for them. However they are absolutely Censored in a dusting of snow.

I'll be buying them again for the RRS next year when the current summer tyes need changing.

If anyone has fav winter tyres I'd be interested to hear your thoughts - seeing as I need to buy some next month.
