PROBLEM COMPUTERS

I have two lap tops at home, both with wireless connections, connecting with an unsecure connection through a Zoom wireless hub, when both laptops are connected to the net they both seem to run slow, the one i use runs at 54mbps on wireless and the other runs at 24mbps,and keeps timing out, if i disconnect mine then the other one then speeds up.and visa versa
The broard band connection is 1.1mbps on both, its the wireless link which is slow

Has any one got any ideas how to fix this Question some of my Previous cars

simple things to do

move both laptops right next to the wireless router and recheck the speeds

ensure your wireless router firmware is upto date

also, GET IT SECURED!!!!! Wink

go to the manufacturers site for your wireless router - they will have info on both areas - if it was a D-Link or Linksys router I could help out immediately, however I dont know anything about Zoom routers

The problem you are suffering from sounds to me like collision.

The wireless hub works on only one channel, and just like using walkie-talkies, your laptops cannot transmit at the same time, and the hub can only send to one at a time any returning data.

Imagine a single piece of wire connecting to the hub from a laptop, for the other to use the hub you have to un-plug it and move it over to the other one. Wireless is just like this only quicker and automatic.

There are some parameters you can play with that will improve things slightly but basically the performance will drop off the more active wireless devices you have.

54Mbs/2 = 27Mbs each
54Mbs/3 = 18Mbs each etc (in fact it is worse than that due to the way the re-transmit timers work but that is really technical)

It gets even worse if you have an old wireless device (802.11b) sharing with new devices (802.11g)

Remember that the device closer to the hub or with a stronger transmitter will get the lions share of the bandwidth. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

OK cheers that makes alot of sense, but why does the mbps go up and down on one laptop only, at the moment it seems to be staying at 54 the same as the other one then all of a sudden it will drop for no apparent reason some of my Previous cars

When it comes down to it - its radio.

Transmitters vary in strength (you can change parameters hidden in the device to do this - illegal)
Receivers vary in quality
Aerials vary in performance (most laptop aerials are hidden inside next to electronics and power circuits - no good)
External electrical noise
Other wireless routers in the street on the same channel (you did select an empty channel rather than the default everyone is using didn't you?)
People, furniture, cats, dogs, weather

Basically if you work on the premise that you are lucky to get a connection at all then it can only get better from there!

All it takes is for one laptop to get a couple of its packets lost/refused for it to downgrade its perception of the link immediately. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit
