2012 Olympics.., who really gains?

It's going to cost BILLIONS of pounds to stage the 2012 Olympic games in London. That's billions of tax-payers money and billions of rate-payers money. In other words.., billions of OUR money. So. if we've been relucantly forced to invest all this money, in an event which many of us didn't want.., exactly who gets all the profits? Where do we, the investors, gain? Hmmm? Confused

Ah but we would get the privelege of paying a fortune for tickets to get into venues that we have paid for Twisted Evil
Agree with you 110%
Saw an interview with Seb Coe the other week when it was announced that the costs had already doubled.

He completely ignored every question about money Twisted Evil

I agree Cliff, it'll be mainly brits who go, those who have already paid for the privelege, who will be ripped off on expensive tickets.

I'm a sports fan, but where's the income going: Olympic Committee, back to government to house more illegal immigrants or build more luxury prisions?? I'm a shareholder and want to know where my profits are going? What do I get back? Evil or Very Mad

In money terms the Olympics are either a break-even venture or most often a little loss. But at the end you have new or upgraded assets that didn't cost you much. Numerically, say it costs the UK 12 Billions, but when it's over you have, say, 10 Billions worth of assets. That's a good deal imo. That's my own thinking so I could be wrong here.

Also, I read somewhere that the games will be held in poor neighborhoods of London, so I think the games will benefit those areas.

Hey, I'm not a Brit so I'm not paying those taxes Very Happy

Like all business ventures, it should be profit-making, or at least self-funding. It obviously will make money, but again, it's funded by MY taxes so what do I persoanlly get back? I'm sure Stelios will sell extra flights, hotels will be chockablock with inflated prices, McDonalds will be bashing out the Big Macs, but they're all privately owned. So, are they the real winners.., get my point?

As it happens, I'm fiercely patrotic, but would still rather see it staged at the expense of Paris, Madrid, or Kazakhstan. After all, dosent matter where it is, most of us wont get to see it in person. Expensive TV viewing then?

Remember the Dome? Can I please have my money back Mister? Sad

Hi Brian, I totally see your concerns, they are really legitimate ones. This issue has been debated for a long time in economic circles.

You seem comfortable with financial terms, so let's use financial statements for analysis.

Imagine a company's income statement getting hit of 5 millions in a form of a loss, but gets a net increase of fixed assets of 4 millions. Yes there was a loss, but it seems the net cost of those assets is only 1 million (everything else being equal of course). I'm not an accountant so this could be a messed up example, but hope the idea came through.

Let me give you another example. Say you are hosting a big party, but it costs so much that you ask each guest to pay a little. The total receipts is 1,000 pounds, but that's not enough. So you put 400 pounds from your own pocket. You use say, 700 to get new plates, utensils, maybe even paint a room, and a few chairs. The rest you pay for food & drinks and such. At the end of the party you will end up with 700 worth of assets that only cost you 400.

As for private businesses, I'll reply in another post. I'm tired of typing Very Happy Btw, that's where the real economic value is Wink
