US has overtaken Britain as Land Rover's most important mrkt

This is an extract of a story the Birmingham Post ran Y'day:-

The US has overtaken Britain as Land Rover's most important market, figures due out today are expected to show.

The Solihull 4x4 specialist had its best ever year in the US in 2006, parent group Ford has said. Sales for the year rose by 3.5 per cent to 47,774 from 46,175 in 2005.

A breakdown of Ford's figures show that Land Rover's record-breaking year was due to the Range Rover Sport which sold 18,757 units, an increase of 80 per cent.

Range Rover itself suffered a ten per cent fall in sales at 12,044 while the company's other big seller in the US, the LR3 - badged in the UK as Discovery - was 12.5 per cent down at 16,930. "Range Rover has always had tremendous cachet in the US where it is seen as a premium vehicle overall, not just a premium 4x4," Land Rover spokesman Mark Foster said.

"Range Rover Sport is a high performance SUV that holds a wide appeal to Americans.

"It has really caught the imagination over there in terms of a vehicle with status and presence. Thumbs Up

"The US is a very important market for us and although the UK sales figures for 2006 have not yet been finalised, there is a good chance that it will turn out now to be our biggest market." UK trade body the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is due to publish its 2006 sales figures today .

TB, put your blindfold on and earplugs in!

Yes, there was some press coverage in Oct/Nov that LR might start building them in the States.................................... however I think that part of the appeal of buying a Land Rover in the States is that it is built in the UK. The UK Toyota, Nissan and Honda factories currently cannot build enough of their cars to satisfy demand for the British built versions of the very same cars that are also built in Japan. I think it is Nissan that even goes to the lengths of putting a Union Flag badge on the back of their cars just so that Japanese clients know!
The cars built here are perceived in Japan to be better quality and better built when in fact they are exactly the same as vehicles made in their home market! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW
