Wrong link Jay! It wasn't VA's one that went into the Thames.
IIRC some guy took delivery of his new RRS and decided to try it offroad along the river bank near Putney. He had his girlfriend with him and off they set. Somewhere they founf they could drive down onto the half tide area in the mud so off he went in his day or so old RRS and started driving in the muddy bit. He managed to get it stuck (on road biased tyres a foregone conclusion!) He asked afriend to come along and rescue him but forgot about the incoming tide. Passers by called for the inshore lifeboat to rescue but the tide came in faster than the recovery cavalry could get there, Owner had to exit through the sunroof into the inshore rescue boat and eventually the tidy overlapped the car. The RNLI could do nothing about it so placed a yellow buoy to mark the wreck. Unfortunately the wreck complete with buoy moved a bit at high tide and the PLA decided that it was a danger to navigation so during the next day sent their floating rubbish recovery barge to uplift the RRS. This floating barge is a hopper ith a hydraulic fork lift attachment on the bow.................. bargee recovered the RRS alright by putting the forks though the drivers and off side rear passenger doors and lifing the car by the roof. One very expensive offroad lesson that one! The item was featured on BBC news and there website, al;so on RNLI website and in their quarterly mag where it got a whole page article with a large photo.
I wonder if the owner ever went on an LRE day after that, or if he bought another RRS!
That is the story as far as I can remember it. Solmeone who posts regularly has the photo as their avatar..................... maybe he is the owner in question Laughing 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Looks like it was not a 1st Ed with those wheels .Still an expensive mistake - I wonder if it was written off or if they cleaned it up and it is back on the roads. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
