Defender might be a great offroad car and normally a good tow car, but as you have found they are somewhat short of go. All the modern Land Rovers can pull almost as much but with their much more power engines they are superb towcars and you would have no problem pulling up to 3 tonnes on a braked trailer behind either a D3, RRS or RR, I wouldn't say you would hardly notice it but with their auto gearboxes and the ablity to change in and out of low box at low speeds they do make towing heavy trailers easier.

I have just seen a photo in this week's AutoExpress of a VW Toureg towing a Boeing 747 for a stunt.................... but when I read on VW had had to ballast the Toureg with 4.5tonnes of water in bags to get traction!!!

Many police authorities are now returning to the L322 Range Rover as they are the only road car that can also haul a fully loaded articulated truck and its trailer off the m'way without suffering terminal damage to the transmission and without modification.
I reckon that if the RR can do it then so can the D3 and RRS as they have the same transmission system. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes I saw that. The weight of the water in the back must have crippled the suspension.

As I don't really need the extra seats and load space my choice of vehicle seems to come down to "do I get value for money in terms of pleasue for the extra £15000 a TDV8 would cost me"?

Jo, you could always save a few quid and go for the RRS TDV6.

You won't find many on here that would complain about the performance of this engine. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. Aspen Leather, Cherry Wood, Privacy Glass, PTI, Tow Pack, Mudflaps, Tasmods, a new Fuelflap, a RRSport.co.uk umbrella in the boot & a RRSport.co.uk sticker on the rear glass.
