Piano Black

When I was test driving my L494, the Mrs commented that the trim looked really worn and tired. The piano black in the centre console was almost grey with scratches and dull spots. The previous owner had clearly never bothered to clean it and had just dumped their keys on it.
I asked the dealer to do what they could as part of the pre-delivery valet but I don't think they did much more than give it a wipe over. It really spoiled an otherwise spotless car.

Initially I looked at getting a replacement but good ones are hard to find and expensive, and I didn't relish stripping it down - so the other night I hit youtube. There were a myriad of 'fixes' out there but the central point is that, just like paintwork, it's lacquered, so treat it the same way as you would paint. They had a range of lotions, potions and tools but it inspired me to have a go with what I have in.

I didn't want to buy a tiny DA so used a sponge applicator and lots of elbow grease instead. Started with a fine finish compound .- seemed to get rid of some of the lighter scratches but was clearly too weak with the sponge. Ended up with a fairly heavy cut compound. Spent an hour and it was greatly improved, not perfect but back the right side of acceptable.

I then went over it with some poorboys Blackhole car polish - which I have left over from doing my Dad's black Mercedes. Can't say I was impressed with it on the merc to be honest so stuck it on a shelf and forgot about it. Anyway, thought I'd give it a second chance. Have to say, I'm very pleased with the results. Not perfect but a world away from when I started.

I used Autosol on mine, dose not seem as it was nearly as bad as yours, light scratches from me leaving the keys on it. Autosol & microfibre cloth, came up like new Thumbs Up Range Rover Sport (gone): Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe: 992 Porsche Carrera 4S: Range Rover Fifty P400e

Never thought of autosol before as I always considered that solely for chrome, but yes, it's really just a fine abrasive when you think about it and should do a great job! 2021 L494 D300MHEV Autobiography

The Universe is doing it's job, I was just wondering this morning about trying to polish my wife's Piano Black RRS centre consol bits. We have Solvo, so I'll give it a go. Cheers. A Cheshire expat in France.
