3.0 T/SDV6: 5W40 recommendation (YouTube, LR Time)?

Have been following LR Time's YouTube channel for a while and was very interested in this video where he goes into the reasons behind some of the T/SDV6 engine's issues.... in particular, his derision of JLR's recommended 5W30 oil, rather than 5W40.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3moekbW6z8

I'd be interested in opinions on this, especially from any of the experts on here such as @OvalAutos or @Disco_Mikey if they would care to chime in pls...

The reason being, I'm pondering buying a friend's 2010 3.0 TDV6 L320 but have had mixed experiences with JLR lately..

- My 2006 D3 (2.7 TDV6) was brilliant for 4 years until I sold it. It's still going strong with the current owner and now has over 200k miles on it.

However...

- the 2010 L320 3.6 TDV8 I bought to replace the D3 needed a new oil pump within 2 months of buying it, then it ate a turbo shortly thereafter... a £5k bill (over £6k incl. the earlier oil pump). That experience rather put me off(!)

I'd hasten to add that I wouldn't chalk up the TDV8's failures on the engine oil spec, I'm just interested to know what expert thinking is on the oil viscosity for a 3.0 TDV6 and whether using 5W 40 would be better..?

Personally I stick to the LR recommended 5w-30 C1 and change every 5,000 miles.

Mines fairly low mileage and the engine is good.

The electrics on the other hand.... L320 Range Rover Sport 2008

My 2012 SDV6 is on 165k miles and is serviced at LR specified intervals and using LR specified oils. Appears so far to be doing well on it. (I hope that doesn't curse it! Big Cry )

As for the TDV8, they are known to have turbo oiling issues and if the oil pump wasn't playing nicely it's no surprise the turbos didn't like it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I'll stick with what the manufacturer recommends, rather than someone who makes purposefully controversial videos, to gain views/comments, and subsequently earn an income from that Thumbs Up
