My colleague from work has an Italian wife and they are planning to drive from London to Salerno in Italy in his 2012 SDV6 to visit the family (I had to look up where Salerno was and it’s about 1300 miles each way).

He’s really worried and asked me if there is anything he can do to prepare his car for such a long drive. I reckoned oil and filter change; check tyres etc and get European break-down cover. Anything else that the car requires can be purchased en-route.

Is there anything else you would recommend? He’s leaving on Jan 20th.

Winter tires, he's gonna go across Europe in winter. And not feel sorry about the tires, as he's gonna be in a snow-free area once he passes Rome. Regards etc.,

Check the oil level, top up the screen wash, check tyre pressures, fill it up with fuel, drive.

If it's correctly serviced, there is no reason to be scared of such a trip. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

in the boot drivers side is a small hatch...you can pack at least 6 1 litre bottles of oil/water in there and under the rear seat is a vast space for spares like jump leads/tow rope /scanner.
Make sure he can actually undo the wheel nuts with what he is carrying and a jack that works.
Make sure the battery is good ie not 5 years old and give it an overnight charge before you go. Always listen to old people or when they die you will live on in ignorance.

Ditch locking wheel nuts. Ditch the scissor jack. Invest in an old style LR bottle jack with the "horns" to lift a wheel. * Current: 2024 D350 Defender 90 on coils!
