WAS moving to General Grabber AT3s...

Hi,

I'm about to replace my tyres with General Grabber AT3s.

Never had AT tyres before but my needs have changed over time and it just seems to make sense now.

Expecting a few differences having read the pros, cons, and experiences of people here.

Will let you know how things go. Barrie.

I run them.on my v8 petrol fullfat with no issues you should be fine

Hey @lrstaylor, did you stick with your 20 inch rims that you refurbed for the AT3s, and if so, stick with the 275 40 20 size? I’m also contemplating a swap onto them at some point soon.

275 45 20 on my sport are road tyres I did go up from the standard size and much better for it. I run 255 55 20 gg at3s on my full size range rover.

I have also just had wildpeak ats fitted to the wife's disco 3 and am very pleased with them

Plan B. Can't get GG AT3s at a Y rating. Anything other than what's on the door plate (wheel /tyre sizes) will constitute an MOT failure here - and render insurance invalid. And I'm not changing the wheels.

Y rating? Are you sure. That's 186mph.

Edit: just checked on my RRS door plate and it really is Y. That's mad as it's way faster than any L320 ever went. I wonder if it was to help the handling by giving a stiffer sidewall. Weird. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

It does seem a bit daft, and I've found quite a bit on the internet about it.

These cars have all the gear to cope with all these different terrains but there are no AT tyres that can comply with the manufacturer's specs for road use. Even the 18" and 19" tyre specs are V and Y speed ratings so changing down a size or two isn't an option.

I suppose one option is to have 2 sets of tyres. One for road use and the other for off-road. Not very practical but...?

In any case, how or why a car manufacturer would specify tyres designed to go 300kph on vehicles that can't go anywhere near that fast is beyond me. Barrie.

Other than the Goodyear MT that the G4s were equipped with, the RRS has always been equipped with a road tyre that can go off road rather than a more 50/50 AT that are quite common now e.g. the Grabber AT3. I guess that was because it was supposed to be the go-anywhere sports tourer of the range (Disco being the load hauler, FFRR being the luxo-barge and Defender being the working vehicle).

I suppose that for many people tyres aren't an issue because most places don't worry about them to the extent of comparing the fitted tyres to the those in the handbook. So long as they're legal then they're legal. Which is why in the UK we can run non-standard tyres on our RRSs - I run the Disco size of 255/55/19 but with a decent speed rating (H) and the higher load rating (110 or 111) required for the Disco.

These days, LR fit "all season" tyres to just about everything but, being LR, they don't specify / fit a true all season or a true all terrain. They specify a winter tyre and design TR to enable what is basically a road tyre to go places it probably wouldn't dream of. But then LR know that whilst their off road ability is the USP of their vehicles, almost no one ever takes them further off road than a high street kerb. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Opted for for Vredestein Quatrac Pro+ These come in a 275/40/20 106Y and are All Season.

As I've said before, it's my view that tyres are a personal thing based on driver preferences while being fit for the purpose of the vehicle, and in my case, strict adherence with the LR handbook for annual testing and insurance reasons. Add 'availability' to that and see what's out there.

For supplying and fitting 4 tyres, wheel balancing, and Hunter Alignment, the total cost will be 913€ incl. tax.

Fingers crossed! And I'll post reviews as & when. Barrie.

I had a set of Vredesteins on my mk1 Audi TT (I know a totally different type of vehicle) and rated them as probably the best tyre I have fitted on that car (including my previous TT). MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

I'm interested in why you've needed to change from what you have been using. New location? Worse weather conditions? Etc.? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
