Advise on first purchase...

Hi all.

I'm in the market for my first RRS. Budget is £30-35k... it's going to be my daily, but I only clock up 6-8k per year.

I fancy an SDV8 for the extra oomph... what are opinions on this engine over the SDV6? MPG isn't necessarily an issue due to miles covered.

I seem to be seeing motors from 2015-2016, on AT almost all (TDV8) are Autobiography models but specs differ and price can be anything from a fairly local JLR dealer with a 15plate on 25,000miles to an indy with a 67plate with 50,000miles with only £4k price difference.

Any advise on warranty... is JLR approved any better than independent warranties. I know the marque isn't renowned for being bulletproof so I must say I'm not sure if I want to go to far afield to buy in case of problems down the road. Any engine work I should look out for, belts/chains etc.

Any advise appreciated. Thumbs Up

Definitely V8 so you don’t have to worry about V6 crankshaft failure, try to get 2016 on as it came with worthwhile improvements and get Euro 6 emissions so as to avoid future emissions zones like ulez. 2015 RRS DIESEL HYBRID

Same comment definitely V8. You can see from my history I’ve just parted with a V6 after the salesman talked me into it. For me a no brainer RRS 4.4 SDV8 AB 2018 – Best of all previous vehicles
RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE 2016 - Lovely vehicle but 2 cylinders missing. Gone
Discovery 4 SDV6 2015 HSE - Gone
RRS TDV8 HSE 2007 – My intro to RRS. Lovely vehicle. Gone
BMW 540 1998. - Highly tuned and ran for ever. Much missed. Gone

United Kingdom 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Autobiography Adriatic Blue

If you only do 6-8k miles a year, it's worth considering the V8 Supercharged. I swapped out of an SDV6 into one 18 months ago and it's the best all-round car I've ever owned and puts a huge smile on my face every time I get in it! Real world MPG for me is around 21 with 26/27 on motorway trips. Engines are fairly "bulletproof" from what I've read on here and I certainly wouldn't be able to go back to a RRS diesel having had this one... 2013 L494 V8 s/c Autobiography Dynamic

Thanks for the link, I will have a think about this... although this being a motor I want to run for a while and the lack of Euro6 clasification may be a problem.

I've done ok so far (I think)...guy on another forum has had two nicked and can't get cover now.

I'm lucky enough to live in the countryside, securuity comes in the form of 2 sets of gates and 2 hungry Rottweilers. When out and about I'd use a disk lock.

Best price I've had is £850 on Meerkat, but for a laugh I checked to see what all the fuss is about and stuck in a London postcode - price went up to £7100! Shocked

I've considered this mate, but I think I have to stick with the diesel, which I can get through my work. My current milage could change also as I'm single at present.

Good luck with your search.

I will shortly be advertising my wife's My16 3.0 diesel (high spec, 47k miles with LR warranty which is transferable)...but also support the V8 being an awesome engine

Pay for warranty is the number 1 thing I tell anyone whos interested in a RRS, whether your budget is 25k or 55k , always get a decent warranty it will pay for itself.

Thumbs Up

Surely that's answered your question, 5.0L Supercharged only one to have while you have the chance. Rolling with laughter

Is there a big difference with the infotainment pre/post 2017?

I thought I'd found the ideal motor, and with spare change in the budget... a 17 plate then I realise it has the older infotainment which doesn't look as good on the face of it.

I have an E92 M3 so if I want speed and a V8 roar, that ticks those boxes.

This RRS will be my daily which I can fuel through my business as long as it's derv. Wink

If it's got to be diesel, the SDV8 would be ticking my boxes. The SDV6 is a nice motor but the V8 diesel is just a bit better in every respect (except weight over the front axle but it is a 2.5t 4x4 not a sports car). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
