terrain response questions asked other forum

Does anyone know what the different options actually do, ie what changes are made?
Seems some of the options affect throttle response, auto select height, hill descent and low box etc.
But what about ABS, TC, shock absorbers etc, do we know what changes each selection makes?
Is anything else impacted, airbags crosslinked etc? Any changes in the gearbox itself?
Probably other things i haven't even thought of!

For D3\L320:

1. On-Road: all systems are primed for on-road performance. DSC is set high, HDC off, low pre-load and diff-lock, fast TC-application. low TC-brake. Standard accelerator and transmission shift patterns.

2. Grass/Gravel/Snow: DSC set normal, HDC on, high pre-load, medium diff-lock, fast TC-application, medium TC-brake. Accelerator mapping changed to give slow engine response.

3. Sand: DSC set low, HDC off, low everything. Accelerator mapping changed to give fast engine response. Auto transmission starts in 2™ (3 if in Low Range). Launch
control (if fitted) is active, reduces wheel-spin via TC in the first few seconds of take-off.

4. Mud/Ruts: DSC set normal, HDC on, medium pre-load, high diff-lock, fast TC-application, medium TC-brake. Accelerator mapping gives slightly slower response than on-road. Auto transmission tends to hold onto lower gears. Gradient Hill Start (if fitted) is active in Low Range.

5. Rock-Crawl: Only active in Low-Range. DSC set high, HDC on, high/fast everything. Accelerator mapping gives slow engine response. Auto transmission aggressively holds lower gears. Gradient Hill Start (if fitted) is active. Pete

To further answer the OP, the airbags are crosslinked anyway but in various off road modes the system tried to keep the wheels on the floor. If dynamic response ARB are fitted, they act as if there is no ARB at all at low speeds (up to 11km/h, I think) to give maximum articulation but will lock solid in cross-slope situations to give roll stability and reduce the risk of a roll over. The system uses accelerometers and a yaw sensor to help determine what type of terrain you're on to best work the roll bars.

ABS and TC are basically the same system (using wheel speed sensors) just working in reverse, and HDC uses the ABS system to actively apply the brakes to control speed without locking. Works very, very well. HDC was first introduced on the Freelander, interestingly, presumably as it didn't have low range to help control speed on descents. If you use HDC and low range together you get a more aggressive HDC application compared to when using it in high range. I've used HDC on an icy hill and was amazed at how well it worked. I got out and had to hold on to the door to avoid slipping over: it was that slippery! But HDC made it look easy.

HDC activates the brake lights (it's hardwired in to the system) which is why a failed brake light bulb can result in HDC not being available. If HDC isn't available, TR can also throw a wobbly as HDC is integral in a number of the modes. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
