Front diff rebuild cost and questions in the UK?

Hello,

Can anyone tell me approximately how much a UK gear & diff specialist would charge for rebuilding a front diff (LR006011) for Disco 3/RRS L320, 2009, if you yourself supply the rebuild kit ( quality Timken 4 bearings + 3 seals), or will they insist on using their own rebuild kit and parts? Also assuming that the problem is bearing-related and not broken or damaged teeth/gearing.

Also, is it possible to change just the bearings and seals in the diff without taking the entire central differential gearing out and disassembling it? Or is it a complete removal, disassembly job and then reassembly with correct calibration ( end float, backlash, shims.....)?

I am based in Central Europe and I have been given an offer of 350 EUR for the rebuild if I supply the unit already out of the vehicle + the complete rebuild kit. Seems a lot to me as the rebuild kit will cost at least 200 EUR, total approx 550 EUR. I see you can buy a completely rebuilt, painted and guaranteed front diff from a know speciliast in the UK for around 530 GBP.

Thanks.

From what I have seen you can replace the side bearings without any adjustments. It's the pinion bearing that needs all the attention. Also, on a positive note, from what I have seen it is the side bearings that fail. 2009 Range Rover Sport Supercharged

Just done my front diff, replaced the 2 front bearings that hold the main cage, this is the second one I have done and in both cases it was the one front bearing that failed - XAB32010X. As the previous post suggests all you need to do is remove the old bearing and install new no adjustments, just make sure that the diff spins and hasn't locked tight, which can be caused if the bearings are not fully seated. Also make sure you get the correct bearings, one of them has an internal taper which you need otherwise the bearing will not seat fully.

I did a quick video to show the damage, the most obvious effect is a really bad noise when coming off the power and free wheeling
