I have a water softener in my house, brilliant device and an excellent investment.
If you live in a hard water area it will save you a lot of effort in the long run, as well as saving time on cleaning (kettles, iron, shower head, taps, shower glass etc).
They work on an ion exchange basis but it is not full demineralisation, just removal of calcium and magnesium (limescale).
Easy enough to fit, running costs are mostly the salt tablets to make the brine. RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014

I'm sure the subject of car washing is wandering off topic a little, but I can't resist contributing any longer!

I wash my car using rainwater out of my water butt. Not an ion or a streak to be seen and its free.

Try it and be converted.

I cut out the middle man and just leave my RRS out in the rain. Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Rather ironically, the rain in Winter is cleaner than the rain in Summer due to the reduced dust particulates in the air. Rainwater from a barrel, assuming it has been sat for a while, should be very clean at the top, however leave it too long and you will encourage green algae in the window rubbers and nooks and crannies. RRS HSE Dynamic SDV6 2014

I was being a bit glib, to be honest, as I don't wash cars. I haven't personally washed a car in years. Mine gets washed when serviced although I did take it to a local car wash prior to a recent wedding as I had been asked to give some of the bride's family members a lift. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
