275 50 20 ??

Hi, 2007 tdv8 RRS time for new tyres & would like to move away from 40 profile tyres, currently on 275 40 20 heard going to 45’s OK but wondering about 50’s. Would they cause clearance issues?? Especially on full lock etc, thanks

Hi i know from 40s to 45s no issues and the ride is markably improved, 50s no idea.

Is it better to go to the 255/50/R19 than stay with the 20"?
I'm debating as I also want to move away from the 40 profile.
The r19 being a standard fit

thoughts? 2013 L320 3.0 TD in grey! sometimes towing a Buccaneer Cruiser.

I’m really happy with my 19” setup, was a little disappointed as I would of liked 20 or 22” for the looks but then I was naive about the ways of the RRS.

I’ve since found my non ACE 19” setup both comfortable and very accomplished round the twisty bits, least that’s one thing that doesn’t need upgrading. Steve

275/50/20 ??

Hi.

I've just this morning changed from 275x40x20 to 275x45x20 (General Grabber AT3's)and I can safely say that the difference in ride quality is outstanding. Much smoother without the jarring you get on the 40's when you hit a bump or whatever.

Obviously the taller the profile the better when looking for ride comfort and off road ability, but I found that going to an even taller profile on a 20" rim does present itself with some compromises.

I have been running 275/45 x 21" wheels/tyres for well eight years on my current facelift L320 and previous pre-face lift car and have had absolutely no issues with clearance or anything else for that matter, the suspension has also been lowered slightly. As the overall diameter of the 275/45 x 21" is 781mm and the overall diam. of the 275/50 x 20" is 783mm, I really don't see fitting that size would be a problem as not sure the extra 2mm is going to make any significant difference.

Is anyone towing with the 275/45/r20 ?
Curious to know what the impact is.

I notice that the diameter is larger than the 255/50/r19
and just curious if anyone has seen any issues?

I am, and it's far more stable than on the 255/55x20 Pirellis I had before, plus, my towing height is spot on using my Dixon Bate slider for all of my trailers, just 2 positions required.

I should add I tow with my Disco4, not the RRS.

Well I checked with the insurance company about the 275/45 R20
They politely told me that they wouldn't be able to provide insurance cover for
any non-standard wheels/tyres
But they did say I could cancel the cover with no extra charge as they wouldn't be able to
provider cover.

So... What are the standard 19" wheels for a 2013 L320? Is it only the "snowflake" ones?

Don't know who you are insured with obviously, it was a while ago now and things have probably changed, but had the car insured with LV when in the UK and they had no problems with running a different wheel/tyre size provided they were genuine L/R 20 & 21" rims just classed it as a notifiable modification, didn't even put the premium up when had the car (5.0L S/C) remapped provided it wasn't more than a 20% increase if I remember correctly.

Did they mean they wouldn't provide cover for the non-standard wheels/tyres themselves, or did they mean they won't cover you at all in the car?

It would be worth restating that you ARE using standard wheels, on a standard car, just making a very slight change in the tyre sidewall size.

I'm insured with them now. They said that their underwriters will not provide cover for any non-standard wheel/tyre combo.
Basically if its not the size etc stamped on the car door - go away.
At least for them.
As long as I stay standard they don't care which of the standard ones i choose
so either 275/40R20 or 255/50R19 nothing else.

Following up on this old post I have just been through the insurance issue wanting to go for a 275/45r20 all terrain but NFU would charge me an extra £160 a year so I decided not to. So I had the choice of 275/40r20 or 255/50r19.
I could only find one all terrain in 255/50r19, the General Grabber.
In 275/40r20 I found three. Continental ATR which looked good for me but out of stock it crazy expensive. General Grabber but I was put off by the online tyre review with the awful wet breaking distances. The last was Matador MP72, not much info on them online but I have gone with them. My reasoning is, can the wet braking actually be worse than the General Grabber.
Anyway they are fitted and I’ve driven from Cornwall to London. At motorway speed, well, any speed they are quieter than the Avon/Michelin road tyres which I’m really surprised. Maybe a little harsher over bumps but I’m not sure it’s that close. With such deep tread vs worn out road tyres there is a little less feel but really they are just fine.
Not been in heavy rain or off road yet. As far as wet braking, its one of those things I’ll probably never know until an emergency.
Impressed so far.
