Time to say goodbye

I purchased my 2010 RRS in December 2020 and it has been an absolute nightmare. It has been on a recovery truck 3 times and has cost me the following:
Front lower arms ~ £400
Gearbox needed a recondition as it wouldnt go into 4/5/6th gear ~ £1500
Air suspension pump ~ £400
Dynamic Response ECU ~ £900
Dynamic Response front pipes ~ £1000
It has water leaks on the front passenger side even though it has been repairs numerous times. The amp stopped working and had to be replaced, and the rear tailgate switch broke so it wouldnt open.

I had a remap done 2 weeks ago and it broke down again. The diagnosis was high pressure pump, and I have been quoted roughly £3000 for a repair. I decided to cut my loses and sold it as spares and repairs and got 4k for it.

I have now purchased a 330d Xdrive and couldn't be happier with it.

Before I purchased it, I made it sure it was a well looked after example, had full FSH from land rover and was in always repaired by a LR specialist. I was told to avoid LR as they are unreliable, but I always thought that was just a myth as most of the people who told me had never owned one. Turns out they were right

And there you go. LR dealership mechanics are worse than not servicing the thing at all.

The front lower arms won't put it on a recovery truck. Gearbox will if it goes totally but otherwise should be "get you home". I wonder what was wrong with it. EAS pump is a weak point, sadly. A DR ECU failure is pretty rare - at least as far as complaints raised in here are concerned. If it was in a LR dealership, they'll just chuck your money at it until it's happy. DR front pipes seems a bit steep. Why were they changed? Was this part of the "change things until it's happy" approach? Water leaks - does it have a sunroof? If so, simple issue to sort so long as you don't go to a LR dealership.

A remap is on you. You take any vehicle outside of the manufacturer's specs and you're on your own. Yes, many people have had successful remaps, but you can't blame LR for a bad remap.

The people who claim they are unreliable have generally never had one. They're the same people that claim they're rubbish off road or in the snow.

I have had two RRS, have done about 200,000 miles in them and only been let down at the side of the road once. Which is exactly the same as the only other car that let me down - a VW Golf. And everyone knows they're reliable.

You can always buy a lemon, sadly. The real problem with LRs is the Censored poor dealership mechanics. If you use a dealership for any work, it's even odds to come back as broken as it was before, if not more.

Anyway, all the best with the Beemer. Does it have the optional indicator pack fitted? Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

In my experience, regarding main dealers, I don't believe in general that they have real mechanics anymore, they are just fitters that install new parts rather than try and fix the problem. Sad state of affairs but it's a money maker. 2015 RRS HSE Dynamic 3.0 SDV6

Some issues are wear and tear, my MY12 has 103k with a few small issues nothing leaving me by the side of the road. I have a great Indie that keeps it maintained and it did come with a full LR FSH and I bought it sight unseen from a dealer in Scotland. The car has been fantastic, yes bushes, brakes, tyres, along with a cracked crossover pipe have been replaced. I drove a MY 2016 last week and will stay with mine.
I don’t see the need for a remap, with all the issues you had, why spend the cash until you had the car sorted? 2018 Telsa MS

I feel your pain, but some of what you list is what you'd reasonably expect when buying another car, and fixing the things that the last owner either didn't or knowingly left as they were selling it. I always factor in fixing the things that the last owner hasn't . 10 years from a suspension pump sounds about right to.

Did the gearbox fail after the remap? and who did the remap? You can easily overstress things with a remap, and a vehicle that weighs 2+ tonnes.

I have the opposite problem with my RRS, I genuinely find it so good, I can't think of what else to replace it with, and I've had it 6+ years. Anyway good luck with the 330. I've had a few BMW's and really liked them, but cold hard maths didn't indicate that they cost me any less, and as my mate always says, "The 'bong' of expense is always just around the corner!"
