2007 RRS TDV8 Vs TDV6

Hello all,

I would like your advise and comments.

I have had LRs for a long time. I had a 2008 RRS TDV6 for about 4 years and was very happy with it.

I only sold it because I had the chance to buy a D5 new, and decided to get something new with full warranty for once.

I regret selling my RRS because it was in such good condition, but I have seen what looks like a very nice RRS TDV8 for sale near me.

What is the TDV8 like for reliability?

Does it have the same timing belt issues that the TDV6 has?

Does it use the same gearbox?

I am thinking of buying it partially to use for towing my horse trailer and going in and out of the field, but then also to give to my daughter in 3 years when she gets her license.

Do you think that the TDV8 is a reliable motor?

I think all models have their problems, but I'll stick my neck out and say most people will say the V8 is the better of the two. Timing belts are not an issue on the V8 as they have chains I believe, EGR valves are not really an issue with the V8 but are easily sorted on the V6. Biggest issue with the V8 is potential turbo failure which is expensive. 2010 RRS, TDV8
bali Blue / colour coded
side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

I bought my 2007 TDV8 two years ago very happy with it, have found a great independent to look after it . It came with a very comprehensive service history which I was told is vital , my indie reckons that oil changes are extremely important in prolonging the life of the turbos & also letting the engine idle for about a minute before turning off after a journey. Fuel consumption varies between 20-30 mpg the lower is when I am towing our twin axle caravan. Have had all the central locking actuators replaced in the doors this seems a very common fault, worth checking to haggle the price down, good luck with your search. I read on this forum the problems with the V6s especially the crankshaft issues which swayed me towards the V8.

If it turns out to be interesting, I will go and take a look.

Fortunately, I have some experience with rrs and D3s albeit with the TDV6

What maintenance is different between the TDV6 and the TDV8?

What should I check that is special to the TDV8?

Maintenance is basically the same as the TDV6 excepting the TDV8 doesn't need a belt change.

The mechanical differences between the TDV8 and V6 are items you can't check - the dynamic response has a different tune (heavier engine required different anti roll performance from the active roll bars), the gearbox has an extra planetary gear (I believe this was first done with the 4.2SC), the rear half shafts are the same heavier duty items as the ones used when a locking rear diff is fitted on other versions.

Otherwise, there are some spec differences such as fitting of active cruise control as standard.

EGRs last well on the TDV8 for some reason. The exhaust manifold can crack - expensive repair. Turbos need care to avoid early failure.

TDV8 is a fabulous engine which gives easy performance which really suits the Range Rover theme. I wish I still had mine ( as well as the SDV6 I have got). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Do all TDV8 have the dynamic response?

My TDV6 RRS didn't have it.

Is it the same as the old ACE that the D2 had?

All TDV8 had dynamic response.

The overall effect is the same - to give a variable roll stiffness. The hardware was different, however.

The D2 had a hydraulic cylinder that acted on one end of the anti roll bar to effectively soften / stiffen the bar. The system in dynamic response has the hydraulic cylinder incorporated within the bar itself. It works be expanding / contracting the cylinder and this, thanks to spiral grooves within the cylinder causes the bar to stiffen / soften by either adding or removing roll bar motion. At low speed, the system behaves as if there is no bar at all. At speed it gives a stiffer roll rate. This means that in off road conditions, maximum articulation is possible. In high side angles, the bars stiffen again to reduce the roll over risk. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Thanks for your responses.

Sadly, the RRS that I saw is now sold, so I missed out on it.

I have seen another one, but it is a VAN with only 2 seats, so not interested.

I will just keep an eye out and if I see anything I will ask for further info.
