CYTA (Cyprus Telecommunications Authority) are an absolute hoot!

To get a landline fitted you have to have a Cypriot contact number.....

Therefore, they can tie you into a CytaVoda contract/PAYG SIM there and then.

OK, not too bad as CY£10 cost added to your first bill for connection and contract costs CY£2 per month! Yes, £2 per month!

OK, so set up a landline and ask for broadband.

Much stroking of chins (I lent the girl some of mine...) and she says that we might be allowed broadband, but a decision will take min. 1 month.

I kid you not, they will decide whether we are allowed it. I know we can get broadband as some of our nieghbours have it!

So yes, wet string dial up for now at a spanking good 40Kbps!
